8 Days Until The Election

By the numbers:

92.4%: the number of eligible women voters who are expected to vote in the coming election. Interestingly, polls show women favoring Netanyahu and men favoring Herzog/Livni.

55%: the percentage price increase of Israeli real estate between 2008 and 2013. Rental prices rose by 30% in the same period. Despite these numbers, there was an increase in apartment sales by 17% in January of this year–as people rush to buy an apartment before prices rise even more.

75%: the number of Israelis drafted into the IDF this Spring who have requested to join a combat unit. This is almost precisely the same percentage as last year and a 5% increase over 2013.

30%: the percentage increase of females drafted into the IDF this Spring who have requested to join a combat unit.

40: the number of pages in the Herzog-Livni party platform. Among other things, the platform promises to renew bilateral negotiations with the PLO, and if the PLO is not interested then to attempt regional approaches to “peace”.  What is the translation of this mumbo jumbo? Simply that the Herzog-Livni are desperate to make concessions to anyone whom they can find.

1,400: the number of solar panels that are being installed on the top of the Knesset. The panels will eventually cover 4,650 sq. meters and produce 450 kw per day.

14.49 meters: the length of the triple jump made by Israeli Hanna Knyazyeva-Minenko yesterday at the European Indoor Championships. Minenko not only won 3rd place and received the bronze medal but also set an all-time Israeli record.

Robert Malley: President Obama’s new anti-Israel choice to head the Middle East desk at the National Security Council. Malley is infamously remembered by Israelis for his 2001 assessment of the 2000 talks between Ehud Barak and Yasser Arafat at Camp David. Malley claimed that the talks were marked by “Palestinian concessions and Israeli failures.” These were the same talks in which Barak offered Arafat 96% of Judea and Samaria and control over “eastern Jerusalem”–even offering to build Arafat a special compound on the Temple Mount.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Your humble servant is still thinking about “the Leftist rally that wasn’t” in Tel Aviv on Saturday night.

Nothing better illustrates the bankruptcy of the “Left”.

The entire theme of the event was an ad hominem attack on Netanyahu with absolutely no positive statement whatsoever about what the Left would want to accomplish were they in office.

The main speaker was former Mossad director Meir Dagan who absurdly launched a tearful tirade about Netanyahu has destroyed the country during his term in office.

But the speaker who has perhaps garnered even more attention here in Israel was Yair Gerboz, a well-known Israeli artist.

Gerboz enraged a great number of people when–in a truly astonishing display of racism–he accused the Sephardic population of being “amulet-kissers, idol worshipers, and bowers at the graves of saints.” He also threw in that they are “thieves and bribe takers” for good measure.  Oh yes, and that they also support Benjamin Netanyahu.

It so happens that your humble servant lives in a largely Sephardic neighborhood here in Ashdod.  There are campaign signs on houses all around ours touting Netanyahu, Herzog/Livni, Baruch Marzel (Yachad), and Naftali Bennett (Jewish Home)–all of which give lie to the Gerboz attempt to label Sephardic voters.

But what everyone in this neighborhood wants to know this morning–as well as many in this country–is why haven’t the leaders of the “Left”, Herzog and Livni, aggressively condemned Gerboz for his racism. Could it be that is what the self-proclaimed liberals and progressives think as well?

Their silence is deafening.
