Rabbi Moshe Levinger: 1935-2015.

Rabbi Moshe Levinger: 1935-2015.

Rabbi Moshe Levinger, a giant of the Jewish community movement in Judea and Samaria and a giant of Israel, died yesterday.

Born in Jerusalem in 1935, Rabbi Levinger studied under famed Rabbi Zvi Yehuda Kook. According to Levinger, it was Kook who taught him “that the Land of Israel must be in the hands of the Jewish people—not just by having settlements, but that it’s under Jewish sovereignty“.

Levinger took the lesson to heart and by 1967 he undertook a series of actions which forever endeared him to Zionists:

**he led the Jewish resettlement of the Etzion Bloc in 1968 which had been ethnically cleansed of all Jews back in 1948.

**also in 1968, he re-established a Jewish presence in Hebron which had been emptied of Jews in the years after the 1929 pogrom there.  With government approval, he established Kiryat Arba and eventually the Jewish quarter in Hebron.

What Levinger accomplished in Gush Etzion and Hebron was a testament to his fervent Zionism, tenacity, and his great love of Israel.

In 1987, a panel of leading Israelis were asked who had had the greatest impact on Israeli society in the last twenty years. The two people they chose were Menachem Begin and Moshe Levinger.

Unfortunately, Rabbi Levinger’s health began to decline during the last decade as he suffered a series of strokes. Nevertheless, he remained the spiritual leader of Judea and Samaria.
