Israel’s Egregiously Flawed Strategy in Gaza

UPDATES:

7 pm Israel time, Sunday, June 7 2015

**The IDF “war games” scenario taking place this week assumes that an all-out Hezbollah missile attack would be easily able to overcome Israel’s Iron Dome defenses–and would probably leave more than 4000 Israeli dead in a matter of days, if not hours.

**It has long been known that BDS head Omar Barghouti, who advocates a cultural, educational, and economic boykott* against Israel, violated the terms of his own organization by receiving his university degree from Tel Aviv University. This week it has also been revealed that Barghouti and his family do not really live in Ramallah as he likes to publicize, but instead in the Israeli city of Akko (Acre).

*Please note that israelstreet uses the German spelling for “boykott” to remind us of the Nazi origins of BDS.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Another day another missile attack on southern Israel by Palestinian terrorists in Gaza.

This time the area hit was Ashkelon with missile warning sirens blaring at around 10 pm for the Chof Ashkelon region as well as the city of Ashkelon. A total of 3 missiles were fired–two exploded in open agricultural areas, and the other was intercepted by the Iron Dome.

No Israelis were physically wounded, but who knows how many of the 500,000 children, women, and men who had to run to their bomb shelters in the night were emotionally traumatized.

And what did the IDF do in response?

The usual.

It went into damage control mode claiming that only one missile was fired, claiming that it was not fired by Hamas, and bombing yet another empty building on the Gaza border to create the appearance of a reaction.

Let’s try once again today to understand the idiotic mindset of Benjamin Netanyahu and his IDF strategic planners as to why they are defending and supporting Hamas.

1. Palestinian Gaza is now overrun with more than 30 terrorist groups. Even though these groups operate almost totally at the beck and call of Hamas, the IDF has divided them into the good guys and bad guys.

2. Just as the Israeli government of Yitzhak Rabin used the Oslo Accords to make the PLO the good guys and Hamas the bad guys, now the Israeli government of Benjamin Netanyahu is creating a situation in which Hamas is the good guy, and the other groups are the bad guys.

3. In this line of thought, the worst of the bad guys are the Salafists in Gaza which are affiliated with Islamic State (IS). Any Israeli attack on Hamas would weaken Hamas and strengthen the Salafists. Israel wants Hamas to be a buffer between itself and the Islamic State.

4. To this end, Israel is now overtly working with Turkey and Qatar–Hamas’s two major supporters and two of Israel’s major detractors–to bolster Hamas. We can see this everyday with Israel facilitating the implementation of Qatari and Turkish based Gaza reconstruction of Hamas infrastructure destroyed last summer.

There are a million absurdities in this situation not the least of which are:

*Israel is turning its back on Egypt which worked with Israel during the war with Hamas last summer.  Egypt is doing its best to cut off funds to Hamas and stop terrorism into the Sinai by blowing up Hamas tunnel everyday–while Israel is allowing Hamas to build and refurbish tunnels willy nilly.

*Israel is not merely turning its back on Egypt, but also on the Gulf States which are attempting–to some degree–to root out radical Islam. While countries like Saudi Arabia outlaw the Muslim Brotherhood, suddenly we have Israel embracing it–under the table.

*What is ironic, of course, is how the original good guy created by Israel, Mahmoud Abbas and the PLO, is now the bad guy again. That in itself is excellent–but the PLO and Hamas are the same evil.

In sum, your humble servant must say that the Israeli strategy is insane. In the name of “avoiding anarchy in Gaza”, Israel is now embracing Hamas, a radical Islamic terrorist organization which has never deviated from its goal of killing Jews and destroying Israel.

Is Islamic State worse than Hamas? Of course not.

In the years since Oslo, Hamas has carried out tens of suicide attacks against Israel and fired tens of thousands of missiles at Israelis. Hamas has systematically rooted out the few remaining Christians in Gaza and forced many to convert or else. We don’t have pictures of Hamas beheading people, but we have plenty of pictures of Hamas shooting people and throwing people off the tops of buildings.

Hamas should have been wiped out long ago.
