UPDATES

8:00 am Israel time, Monday, August 24 2015

**The daily Palestinian terror report . . .

Another 34 terror attacks took place yesterday–none of which were reported in the international media.

There were Palestinian shooting attacks in the Jordan Valley, in Pisgat Ze’ev, and in Mt. Hebron.

There were Palestinian Molotov cocktail attacks at Karmi Tsur, in Gush Etzion, and in Talmonim.

There were Palestinian “rock” attacks on buses and cars between Ofra and Jerusalem, in Hebron and the Hebron Hills, at Hizma, and all along Road 443.

There were more Palestinian “rock” attacks at Rachel’s Tomb, on the Jerusalem Light Rail, and on the Temple Mount.

There was a Palestinian arson attack at Rahelim.

**The funny fact about all of these Palestinian terror attacks is . . .

It is simply flabbergasting that in the face of nonstop Palestinian violence directed against “Jews” our Israeli government does nothing except go after young Israeli Jews.

Another 7 were “administratively detained” yesterday bringing to more than 20 the number who are being detained in prison or severely restricted without being charged with any crime. For those not imprisoned, the restrictions include being banned from Judea, Samaria, and Jerusalem as well as being forbidden contact with their friends.

The “funny” fact is that the more Jews who are detained and restricted, the more Palestinian attacks occur.

**Meanwhile, Islamic State grows stronger everyday in the Palestinian Areas A and B of Judea and Samaria (it has already grown strong in Gaza).

Yesterday, Bethlehem had its first demonstration in support of Islamic State:

**Speaking of Islamic State . . .

It appears that Israel is more involved in the fight than had been previously known. According to a report in the London Financial Times, Israel is now buying 75% of all the oil produced in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq.

Between May and August of this year, Israel purchased more than 19 million barrels of oil at a cost of over a billion dollars. Interestingly, at a consumption rate of 240,000 barrels per day, Israel is supplying approximately 80% of its own needs through purchases from the Kurds.

And what are the Kurds doing with the money? Fighting Islamic State as well as others (Turkey, Iran, Hezbollah, and others).

**On a lighter yet heavier note . . .

roshAs the High Holidays (Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Sukkot) approach in Israel, Herbalife Israel warns that the average Israeli will gain between 1.5 to 3.5 kg (about 3 to 8 pounds) of weight due to all the eating that takes place.

Of course that is not surprising considering all of the yummies that will be on every Israeli table.

Israel continues to be abuzz this morning with the revelation of the “Barak tapes”. These audio-video tapes were recently made by our former Defense Minister Ehud Barak in conjunction with Channel 2 News which is putting together a biography on Barak called Milhamot Hayay (My Life’s Wars).

Given the fact that Barak has always been an egomaniac who is a legend in his own mind, the portions of the videotapes released so far come as no surprise as Barak presents himself as brilliant, decisive leader whose advice no one wants to follow.

But what is startling to many is that Barak apparently will go to any length to glorify himself. To this end, he has revealed the supposedly “secret discussions” of the Netanyahu security cabinet on a number of sensitive subjects. Invariably, he presents Netanyahu as a weak leader who relies on fear instead of hope to lead Israel.

In any case, one segment of the tapes rings particularly true, and that is the part dealing with Iran.

According to Barak, back in 2009 and 2010, he and Netanyahu developed a plan to attack Iranian nuclear facilities and twice the attack was set to take place, once in 2010 and again in 2011.

However, in 2010 the attack was thwarted by Yuval Steinetz (then the Finance Minister), Moshe Ya’alon (then the Minister of Strategic Affairs), and Gabi Ashkenazi (IDF Chief of Staff in 2010). Because these three would not support Barak and Netanyahu (nor would new IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz in 2011),  the votes against the attack by Security Cabinet doves Benny Begin, Dan Meridor, and Eli Yishai could not be overcome.

Hence neither attack ever took place.

There is no reason to doubt Barak’s version of events. For example, during last summer’s war, Ya’alon and Steinetz were racked by dangerous indecision as was Benny Gantz, not to mention Netanyahu himself. Their indecision cost precious Israeli lives.

If there is one thing that the Iranian episode shows, it is that PM Netanyahu was and is never going to attack Iran. In 2009, he formed a security cabinet that he knew would never sign off on an attack (this obviously raises the question of whether he ever really supported Barak’s plan)

Now in 2015, the same cast of characters such as Steinetz and Ya’alon are still in Netanyahu’s security cabinet as are variations of some of the 2009 doves.

Sometimes for better but often for worse, and despite all of his seeming bellicosity, Benjamin Netanyahu is at heart a dove.
