–>These are exciting legislative times in Israel.

The Netanyahu government is actively attempting to change the direction of Israeli society through legislation. Today, Culture and Sports Minister Miri Regev is presenting her “Loyalty in Culture” bill to Knesset Culture Committee. According to Regev:  ”Freedom of expression is part of the country`s DNA, but the state will not fund a cultural body which subverts or burns its flag.”

The law has a long way to go. All proposed laws in Israel must be approved 4 times.

First, the law is approved by a relevant committee. Second, the law must be approved in a first reading. Third, the law must be approved in a second reading. Fourth, the law must be approved in a third reading.

All along the way, objections can be raised, appeals against the law can be made, and changes to the law might be made. And the process can be delayed, postponed, or even shelved. It is a circuitous process at best.

Just a casual glance at the General Agenda for the Knesset from February 1-3 shows what is going on. All of the following proposed Laws have already been approved by the relevant committee.

The Postal Bill is up for its first reading. The postal service in Israel is in complete disarray with letters and packages arriving tardily if they arrive at all. Some major companies such as E-Bay are now refusing to send items via the Israel postal service.

The Bill to Amend the Income Tax Law is up for its first reading.

The VAT Bill is up for its first reading. One part of the bill would exempt certain first home buyers (who served in the military or in civil service or who are disabled) from paying the 18% VAT tax.

The Civil Service Pension Bill is up for its first reading. This would change the method of updating pensions for employees of Israel’s security services.

The NGO Transparency Bill is up for its first reading. This is Ayelet Shaked’s law to require reporting of funding from foreign sources.

The Infiltration Prevention Bill is up for its first reading. This is actually an amendment to the Prevention of Infiltration Law passed in 1954.

The Electronic Defrayal Bill is up for its second and third readings.

The Preserving Public Safety Bill is up for its second and third readings.

The Regulation of Work in the Health Professions Bill is up for its second and third readings.

The Public Housing Bill is up for its second and third readings.

Israelstreet will keep you posted as these laws wind their way through the Knesset.

TODAY’S BLOG:

President Obama speaking yesterday.

President Obama speaking yesterday.

Yesterday, President Obama was invited to speak at the Righteous Among Nations Award Ceremony at the Israel Embassy in Washington.  The ceremony is timed to coincide with International Holocaust Memorial Day and the 71st anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.  Four non-Jews were honored for their efforts in saving Jews during the Holocaust.

Obama’s remarks were moving: “Here, tonight, we must confront the reality that, around the world, anti-Semitism is on the rise. We cannot deny it. When we see some Jews leaving major European cities because they no longer feel safe; when Jewish centers are targeted from Mumbai to Overland Park, Kansas; when swastikas appear on college campuses; when we see all that and more, we must not be silent.”

Israelstreet appreciates the President’s statement against anti-Semitism and his call to “not be silent.” We will ignore for the moment how Obama’s actions themselves have isolated Israel and led to worldwide anti-Semitism.

However, as we have pointed out numerous times on this blog, Obama’s pattern is to make dramatic statements about anti-Semitism and the need to protect Jews, and then to follow this up in the succeeding days with dramatic statements attacking Israel.

Obama feels that as long as he sides with “Jews”, he is free to take the gloves off with “Israel”. It has been a particularly effective strategy in the United States, as Obama has worked for the seven years of his presidency to separate American Jews from Israel.

By the way, the Obama strategy has been adopted by many other Western leaders, most notably David Cameron, Francois Hollande, and Pope Francis. You can be sure if you hear any of these men talking about defending Jews or lamenting the Holocaust, sometime soon the other shoe will drop, and Israel will be in the crosshairs.

Your humble servant wonders what Barack Obama has in store for us next.
