UPDATES 6 pm Israel time
…Palestinian terror today…
At 2:30 pm this afternoon, a female terrorist was shot and killed by Border Guards after she pulled out a knife at the Ras Biddu checkpoint near Giv’on Hahadasha and attempted to stab one of the Guards.
…Palestinian terror yesterday…
More than 30 incidents of Palestinian terrorism occurred.
Molotov firebomb attacks took place at Aisooya, Hebron, Kochav Yaakov, and Marl.
“Rock” attacks took place at Hawara, Aisooya, Zeita, Beit Hanina, Wadi Joz, Husan, Mt. Hebron, Al Fawwar, A-Ram, Bethany, Savana, Rachel’s Tomb, Malek, Shuafat, Road 443, Kochav Yaakov, Al-Khader and elsewhere.
…If at first you don’t succeed, you continue to meddle in Israeli politics…
After failing in his attempt to get Herzog and Livni into the coalition, Tony Blair has turned his attention to Yair Lapid.
For his part, Lapid rejected the attempt, pointing out at the same time, however, that Netanyahu has offered him the post of Foreign Minister.
…About the European boykott of Israel…
While the European Union as a whole continues to label Israeli products, individual countries continue to reach out to Israel.
This morning Yariv Levin, Israel’s Minister of Tourism, signed a memorandum of cooperation with Karla Slechtova, the Minister of Regional Development of the Czech Republic.
…About the entry of Avigdor Lieberman into the Coalition…
It hasn’t happened yet.
As of this hour, there seems to be a stalemate in negotiations between Lieberman’s Yisrael Beiteinu party and the Minister of Finance, Moshe Kahlon. An emergency meeting to resolve a dispute over increasing pensions for immigrants ended with no result a few hours ago.
To make matters worse, Lieberman has apparently added demands concerning the mortgage and rent payments made by new immigrants.
And to make matters even worse, Naftali Bennett is now sticking his nose into the negotations demanding the government enact cabinet reforms.
Talks continue.
…Israel’s economic picture improves…
According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, the unemployment rate dropped from 5.3% in March to 4.9% in April. Improvement was particularly pronounced in the 25-64 age range whose rate fell to 4.4%.
193,000 people remain unemployed in the country.
…Has the investigation of the Netanyahus finally come to an end?…
It may be premature, but reports today are the police have ended their investigation of Sara Netanyahu (and her husband as well). The reports are that there is no evidence that anything was amiss in the absurd “recycled bottles affair”, the “garden furniture affair”, the “electrician on Yom Kippur affair”, and the “Bibitours affair.”
In short, the police seem to be giving the Netanyahus, particularly Sarah, a clean bill of health.
…Ya’alon just doesn’t get it…
Apparently the concept of “innocent until proven guilty” is unknown to Moshe Ya’alon. Even now after the entire series of events surrounding the soldier in Hevron and Ya’alon’s ensuing dismissal as Defense Minister, Ya’alon is still out to lunch.
In yet another astonishing interview yesterday, this time with the Likudnik website, the poor Ya’alon began by describing how he was “abandoned” by Netanyahu:
“When the Hevron shooting incident just happened, Netanyahu had agreed with me that we needed to let the military prosecution investigate and handle this. And then, when he [Netanyahu] noticed the public mood, he changed his mind. As a minister, I had to back the IDF chief, but I felt like Netanyahu abandoned me.”
When asked by the interviewer why he immediately condemned Sgt. Elor Azariah, Ya’alon continued: “He simply took the law into his own hands. He opened fire without justification.”
What part of “let the military prosecution handle this” does Ya’alon not understand?
Netanyahu did not change his mind and abandon Ya’alon; instead, Ya’alon blatantly abandoned proper behavior and attempted to bias the military prosecution against the soldier.
He is still doing his best to convict the soldier.
He just can’t keep his mouth shut.
TODAY’S BLOG
After a 45 day moratorium on “private imports” of cement to Gaza, the idiotic IDF COGAT unit resumed such shipments today.
This resumption comes after the discovery of a huge tunnel leading directly into Israel, a tunnel that was built with cement supplied to Gaza by Israel. And it comes as Israeli engineers and soldiers remain on the border trying to ferret out what are believed to be tens of more tunnels.
By the way, the resumption is based on the idea that there will now be more “international observers” on the Palestinian side to make sure the cement is used for house construction. If you recall, the international promise last year was that with all of the international observers and all of the high-tech monitoring systems, “there was no way that Hamas could get their hands on the concrete to build more tunnels.”
It was a ludicrous idea then, and it is a ludicrous idea now.
But that doesn’t stop the ludicrous COGAT unit from supplying cement, and ludicrous international “leaders” from making ludicrous declarations.
One of those leaders today has been the U.N. Special Coordinator for the Middle East Process, Nickolay Mladenov who commented: “All sides need to ensure that cement deliveries reach their intended beneficiaries and are used solely for civilian purposes.”
Your humble servant has only one thing to say:
Ludicrous.
