…BREAKING NEWS…

12:10 am (Thursday): One more Israeli, a woman, has died from her wounds in the terror attack.  The other three of the gravely wounded Israelis have been upgraded to “critical.”

The two terrorists in the attack are from Yatta, a Palestinian settlement near Hevron. The IDF is currently on the way to Yatta.

If you can believe this, there is currently singing and dancing at the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem, as Arabs celebrate the terror attack in Tel Aviv.

9:30 pm:  3 Israelis shot to death, 4 gravely wounded and currently in surgery, and  2 more moderately wounded in Palestinian terror attack in central Tel Aviv. Two terrorists from the Hevron area opened fire at the Sarona Market area. One terrorist shot; the other captured. More news to follow.

UPDATES 6 pm Israel time

…Palestinian terror yesterday…

Palestinian terrorists attacked Israeli children, women, and men with Molotov firebombs and “rocks” at Funduq, Qalandiya, Shuafat, Kedumim, Ras al-Amud and at least 20 other locations in Judea and Samaria.

…The IDF changes the rules of engagement, again…

How would you like to be an IDF soldier? Everyday, you have to check your mobile device and your email to find out what the geniuses in the IDF General Command have come up with.

This morning, Central Command Operations Officer Lt. Col. Dror Spiegel sent out a new directive forbidding IDF soldiers from shooting at fleeing terrorists.

According to the directive, if a “rock” or Molotov firebomb attack takes place, and the terrorist runs away after throwing the “rock” or Molotov, a soldier is only allowed to shoot in the air–and not at the terrorist.

An unnamed officer in the Givati Brigade commented: “This directive is delusional and crazy. They can bombard us with Molotovs without end knowing that all they have to do is turn around and run, and we cannot fire.”

…The trial of Elor Azariah, the Hevron soldier, becomes surreal…

Today we have been witness to the unbelievable scene of the military prosecution calling witnesses to the stand from the hideous anti-IDF organization B’Tselem to speak against the soldier.

One such witness was the photographer who shot the original video that was handed over to the media about the incident. He testified that he had not edited the video in any way.

And if you believe that, your humble servant will sell you some beachfront property in Mitzpe Ramon.

Another “witness” was Nasser Nawya–also from B’Tselem– who apparently worked with Ezra Nawi to have Palestinians who sold land to Jews tortured and killed.

It is a stinging indictment of the military prosecutor’s office that it has resorted to using our enemies as witnesses against our own soldiers.

…Israelis are traveling even more…

Everyone knows that Israelis are travel addicts, taking trips to all corners of the world all the time.

In the last month alone, there were 497,000 “Israeli departures” from Israel; (423,000 of these were Israelis who left the country one time, the rest were departures of people who left for abroad, returned, and left again).

461,000 of the departures were by air and 6,000 by sea.

All in all, it was a 14% increase over departures in May of 2015.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Well aware of the famous admonition about lies, damned lies, and statistics, your humble servant was intrigued by a series of statistics that appeared yesterday courtesy of the Jerusalem Institute for Israel Studies.

Some of those statistics are not surprising.

For example, anyone who has taken a taxi or bus in western Jerusalem knows that he or she is likely to have a driver who is an Arab. It turns out that 55% of all transportation, storage, and postal workers in western Jerusalem live in eastern Jerusalem.

Similarly, anyone who has ever stayed in a hotel in western Jerusalem from the iconic King David Hotel to the Mt. Zion Hotel is likely to be checked in by an Arab and have his or her room taken care of by an Arab. It turns out that 40% of the hospitality and dining workers live in eastern Jerusalem.

And anyone who has taken a look at any building being constructed in Jerusalem (or anywhere else in Israel for that matter) knows that most of the construction workers are Arab. In western Jerusalem, almost 70% of the construction workers live in eastern Jerusalem.

One of the most astonishing successes in interwining eastern and western Jerusalem has been the Jerusalem Light Rail system. According to the statistics 129,000 passengers ride from eastern Jerusalem to western Jerusalem and back every day.

What is fascinating is that if the Arabs who live in eastern Jerusalem are not working in western Jerusalem, they are probably working in Area C of Judea and Samaria. All told only 5% of Arabs in eastern Jerusalem work in Areas A and B of Judea and Samaria in territory under control of the PLO.

Equally fascinating is the religious breakdown of eastern and western Jerusalem:

M=Primarily Muslim living in eastern Jerusalem

J=Primarily Jewish living in western Jerusalem

Ultra-orthodox (extremely religious)                2% (M)                           29% (J)

Religious (very religious)                                     34% (M)                          26% (J)

Traditional (religious)                                         60% (M)                          19% (J)

Secular (not religious)                                            2% (M)                          26% (J)

Another unfortunate finding is that a large percentage of residents of both sides of the city are on government welfare with many living well below the poverty line. In western Jerusalem, the most impoverished are the ultra-orthodox. In eastern Jerusalem, 80% of the residents are receiving some form of government help.

To conclude, we are wary of drawing too many conclusions from the numbers because of the subjectivity involved in getting them. But suffice it to say that anyone who seriously thinks that it would be easy to divide Jerusalem is delusional–and the first people to resist such a move would probably be the Arabs living in eastern Jerusalem.
