UPDATES 9 am Israel time:
*16 Palestinian terrorists were captured overnight in the Palestinian settlements of Laqiya, Yatta, Beit Ummar, and Awa. In the process of the making the captures, IDF forces found numerous guns, large amounts of ammunition, and pre-prepared Molotov firebombs.
*4 Palestinians were captured at Ben Gurion Airport last night after they drove their car through the security barrier at the entrance to the airport.
*A bulldozer attack took place near Ni’lin when a Palestinian terrorist crashed into two cars carrying Israelis. The terrorist escaped.
*”Rock and Molotov firebomb attacks took place at the Tapuach Junction, Beitar, Ras al-Amud, Rachel’s Tomb, Abu Dis, Hevron, Shuafat, the Maccabim checkpoint and Ofer on Road 443, and Efrat–among other places.

Who’s going to the IDF?
Basically, when an Israeli man turns 18, he has three choices: he can go to the IDF; he can choose to do national service; he can claim an exemption (for religious reasons, health reasons, family reasons, and other reasons).
Yesterday, the IDF released statistics about how many 18-year-old men from specific cities take option one and go the IDF:
Katzrin 100%
Ariel, Ma’ale Adumim, Ramat Gan 97%
Sderot, Ramat Hasharon 96%
Netivot, Raanana, Hod Hasharon 95%

Let’s consider these numbers for a moment.
To begin with, look at the cities which are at 87% or higher.
*Katzrin is the only city on the list that is in the Golan Heights–in other words, on the border with Syria. Katzrin’s residents go to sleep every night listening to the bombing and artillery fire coming from the fighting there.
*Ariel and Ma’aleh Adumim are the two largest cities in Area C of Judea and Samaria. The residents of these cities are on the front lines of terror emanating from Areas A and B of Judea and Samaria.
*Sderot and Netivot are on the Gaza border and in the crosshairs of Hamas along with Beersheva and Ashkelon; Nahariya in the north is in the crosshairs of Hezbollah.
*Ramat Gan, Hod Hasharon, Ramat Hasharon, Netanya, Ra’anana, and Kfar Saba are interesting in that they have always been considered a strong part of the patriotic core of central, coastal Israel.
*Beit Jann is the “Druze capital” of the north. The Druze from this city provide a number of commanders of various divisions within the IDF.
In the low 80% range, we have the cities stretching from Haifa to Tiberias to Petah Tikva to Tel Aviv. Haifa and Tel Aviv-Yaffo are mixed cities with large Israeli-Arab populations.
At the bottom of the scale at 76% and lower we have Modi’in Illit, Jerusalem, Arad, and Ashdod. Why are their numbers so low?
*Modi’in Illit is a city almost solely of ultra-orthdox Jews.
*Jerusalem has a high percentage of ultra-orthodox Jews and Israeli-Arabs.
*Arad has an ever-increasing number of Israeli-Arabs.
*Ashdod has an ever-increasing number of ultra-orthodox Jews.
What conclusions can we draw from all of these numbers?
Obviously, the closer one is to terror–whether it be in the north, south, or in Judea and Samaria– the more one wants to serve in the IDF. Also obvious is the fact that the paucity of soldiers coming from ultra-orthodox communities does not bode well for Israel, especially considering that the number of ultra-orthodox in the country is expected to double in twenty years.
Finally, what is missing from this list? Three major components of the IDF: new soldiers who are women; new soldiers from the 120 Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria; and new recruits from Israel’s kibbutzim. In many of these communities and kibbutzim the IDF enlistment rate is 100%.
