TODAY’S BLOG:

As you know from the special notice above, your humble servant is continuing his travels through Europe.

A short snippet from yesterday in Madrid: as we were riding on a bus through the city we saw the following sign draped on a large government building:

Refugees welcome.

Refugees welcome.

Three blocks later, we hopped off the bus into a sea of refugees who were seated near the Atoche train station sellling odds and ends on the sidewalk.

Suddenly, in a great swoosh they all jumped to their feet, grabbed their sacks full of their belongings and began running. A second after that carloads of police pulled up. They turned on their sirens, jumped out of the cars, and began chasing the refugees up the street (look closely under the face of Col. Sanders on the KFC sign):

Refugees not welcome.

Refugees not welcome.

Welcome refugees?

Not hardly.

We have talked to numerous Spaniards since arriving here. Beset by an overall 22% unemployment rate–and a 50%+ unemployment rate among those 35 years of age and younger–the Spanish are not happy about the refugee invasion.
