There Will Never Be Peace With The Palestinians

UPDATE: IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING PM NETANYAHU’S UN SPEECH LAST NIGHT, SOUTHERN ISRAEL WAS PUT BACK ON HIGHEST TERRORIST ALERT.

Netanyahu speaking last night at the U.N.

If you are reading this blog today, it means that you know what happened at the United Nations last night. Mahmoud Abbas’ fiery speech made to pathetic thunderous applause was similar in tone and content to the speech he made last Friday, and Benjamin Netanyahu delivered an impassioned and brilliant defense of Israel which was also met with applause and occasional cheers.

Abbas handed Ban Ki-Moon ‘Palestine’s’ application for U.N. membership (it was announced this morning that it will be considered by the Security Council on Monday).  And it was announced that the ‘Quartet’ thinks that it has come up with language that will start face-to-face talks between Palestinians and Israelis within a month leading to a Palestinian state within one year.

Today, your humble servant would like to focus on a brief section from each leader’s speech beginning with Mahmoud Abbas, who appeared on the U.N. schedule and was announced before speaking as: “His Excellency Mr. Mahmoud Abbas, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization and President of the Palestinian Authority.”

What struck me amidst all of Abbas’s usual ridiculous rhetoric about colonialism and occupation, was his de-Judaization of Israel. Not one time in his speech did Abbas utter the word “Jew”, or “Jewish”, or “Judaism”. At a moment when Abbas could have become the statesman and shown the world his acknowledgement of Jewish ties to the land of Israel, he remained the petty terrorist politician he has always been and attempted to lead listeners to believe that such ties do not exist:

“I come before you today from the Holy Land, the land of Palestine, the land of divine messages, ascension of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the birthplace of Jesus Christ (peace be upon him), to speak on behalf of the Palestinian people in the homeland and in the Diaspora, to say, after 63 years of suffering of the ongoing Nakba: Enough.”

How can Israel ever make peace with a people who refuse to acknowledge that Israel is the homeland of the Jewish people?  How can Israel ever make peace with a people who attempt to usurp Jewish history at every turn and cynically call it their own (note this extends down to the use of the word “diaspora” and the very terminology of the Passover seder: “Dayenu”…”Enough”)? Israel may be able to reach an accommodation with the Palestinians, but there will never be peace.

This is a fact that Benjamin Netanyahu knows all too well. He knows that the Palestinians will never call Israel a “Jewish” state. He knows that the Palestinians will never declare their quest for Tel Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem to be at an end. He knows that the Palestinians will never stop believing that one day all Palestinian ‘refugees’ will return to Israel and rid the land of Jews forever.

What he doesn’t understand, and neither does your humble servant, is why the rest of the world doesn’t see it. Netanyahu spoke for many of us last night when he said:

“Israelis remember the bitter lessons of Gaza. Many of Israel’s critics ignore them. They irresponsibly advise Israel to go down this same perilous path again. You read what these people say and it’s as if nothing happened — just repeating the same advice, the same formulas as though none of this happened.”

There really is no easy explanation for why some politicians, academicians, and others on the “Left” continue to demand concessions from Israel and attempt to lead our country down the dangerous road to oblivion. Either they are abysmally ignorant of history, or they simply want to see the end of Israel as a Jewish state. They must know that concessions, even unilateral ones, have not worked; they must know that the Palestinians have not changed; they must know that the Palestinians have incited generation after generation to hate Israel–and to hate Jews.
