The News On The Israeli Street
Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .
In Judea and Samaria:
Palestinian terrorists attacked Israeli men, women, and children with “rocks” and Molotovs in more than a dozen places including the northern entrance to Efrat, Al Fawwar, Al Aruv, just outside of Hizma, and at several places along Road 443.
The IDF captured 19 wanted terrorists overnight.
Jordan warns Israel . . .
King Abdullah has warned PM Netanyahu in recent days that if Israel annexes the Jordan valley, it will severely damage Israel-Jordan relations.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
What a joke.
Jordan demands water from Israel; Jordan refuses to continue the lease on the small area at the Island of Peace; Jordan encourages a Muslim takeover of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem; Jordan attacks Israel in every international venue, and on and on.
Jordan does nothing to further Israel-Jordan relations. Annexing the Jordan Valley will not change anything.
Negotiations underway . . .
At this moment, Kahol Levan and Likud are in negotiations over trying to set up a coalition government (see Today’s Blog below). Yoram Turbovich is leading the Kahol Levan team and Yariv Levin is in charge of Likud.
Levin is the current Tourism Minister of Israel; Turbovich is a lawyer who was once considered PM Ehud Olmert’s right-hand man.
The seasons begin to change . . .
This morning was the coolest morning across the country since last March.
The coolest spot was Avnei Eitan on the Golan Heights with a temperature of 14.6 C (58 F); in Jerusalem this morning it was 17.6 C (64 F) at 6:00 am.
TODAY’S BLOG:
Is Unity At Hand . . . Or Not?
The picture posed for the cameras at the President’s residence of Netanyahu, Rivlin, and Gantz all touching hands was just that . . . posed.
Despite the fact that the meeting lasted around two hours and all seemed smiley when it was over, it didn’t take long for accusations against Netanyahu to begin flying from Gantz’s Kahol Levan (Blue and White) Party.
By all accounts, Gantz is incensed that Netanyahu met with the leaders of his 55 mandate right-wing block afterwards and told them that he was negotiating for all of them–and that none of them would be left behind in a unity government.
To hear Gantz tell the story this morning, Netanyahu was only negotiating for Likud, not for the ultra-orthodox parties and not for Yamina.
More specifically, Blue and White proclaimed today that Kahol Levan would never agree to sit in a government in which Netanyahu is prime minister, and one that includes United Torah Judaism and the National Union Party (part of Yamina).
While all of this was taking place, Avigdor Lieberman made news yesterday by expanding the list of political parties he will not sit with in a coalition government. In addition to the ultra orthodox parties and the Joint Arab List, Lieberman proclaimed that his Yisrael Beiteinu party would also not be part of a coalition that includes the ultra-left Democrat Union party of Meretz and Ehud Barak.
Here’s the current playbook of who won’t do what:
Yisrael Beiteinu (Lieberman) will not be in a coalition with Shas, United Torah Judaism, the Joint Arab List, and Democratic Union.
Blue and White (Gantz) will not be in a coalition with United Torah Judaism, National Union, and Netanyahu as prime minister.
United Torah Judaism (Litzmann) will not be in a coalition with Kahol Levan (Blue and White) as long as Yair Lapid is one of the party heads.
Likud (Netanyahu) will not be in a coalition with Joint Arab List.
Labor (Peretz) and Democratic Union (Meretz and Barak) will not be in a coalition with Netanyahu as prime minister.
To make a long story short, Avigdor Lieberman and Benny Gantz in particular have climbed some very tall trees, and one wonders if they will ever be able to climb down far enough to compromise.
One last note: Gantz and Netanyahu have been invited to dinner at President Rivlin’s tomorrow. While the three of them eat, negotiating teams from Kahol Levan and Likud will work in the room beside the dining room.
