The News on the Street in Israel

The daily Corona update . . .

5 pm Sunday: There are now  13,362  confirmed cases of Corona in Israel. 109 people are on ventilators. 172 Israelis have died. 3,564 have recovered. Check the breaking news ticker above for further updates.

Once again, the number of confirmed cases has only increased incrementally. The number of people critically ill on ventilators has dropped (not necessarily a good fact–see Today’s Blog for more details as to why). The number of dead Israelis has increased by about 10. The number of recovered has increased by a few hundred.

Life is slowly returning to “normal”. This is a photo taken from a security camera on the freeway between Rishon LeZion and Tel Aviv this morning:

traffic

Normally this section of freeway would be packed; however, this number of motorists is approaching normal. Obviously, a significant number of Israelis are not staying at home as restrictions are relaxed. Even so, there was a major demonstration at Tel Aviv’s Azrieli Intersection this afternoon by people demanding to be allowed to go back to work.

In another sign of increasing “normalization”, Egged bus lines announced today that it is doubling the number of buses on the road throughout the country. As you may not know, Egged is a major provider of public transport in Israel.

Is tonight the night? . . .

Is tonight the night that an agreement will be signed between PM Netanyahu and Benny Gantz?

This afternoon, Gantz issued yet another threat designed to ramp up the pressure on Netanyahu to sign by tomorrow morning. This time the threat was that after the Knesset passes anti-Netanyahu laws on Monday that will prohibit Netanyahu from forming a government, it will then proceed to establish and populate the Judiciary Committee which plays a major role in choosing Israeli judges.

You may be asking yourself how Gantz can issue such a threat inasmuch as he separated from Lapid, Ya’alon, and the Joint Arab List.

The answer is simple. As much as Lapid, Ya’alon, and the Joint Arab list hate Gantz and have called him everything from a traitor to a slimy invertebrate (he actually is a slimy invertebrate), Lapid, Ya’alon, and the Joint Arab list hate Netanyahu more.

The Drop In Israelis On Ventilators: Not Necessarily A Good Thing

A patient on a respirator.

A patient on a ventilator.

Why is the drop in Israelis on ventilators not necessarily a good thing? Take the last two deaths (patients 171 and 172) as an example. Both of them died at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center last night.

Patient 171 was a 29-year-old woman who was already in Hadassah suffering from a terminal illness when she apparently contracted Corona. She lost consciousness and was placed on a ventilator. After her condition deteriorated to a point at which she was deemed irrecoverable, the ventilator was removed and she died. Unable to be with her, her family recited the Kaddish (mourner’s prayer) by telephone.

Patient 172 was a 76-year-old woman who suffered from numerous pre-existing conditions. Admitted to Hadassah two weeks ago after being confirmed with Corona, she had been anesthetized and placed on a ventilator. After her condition deteriorated to a point at which she was judged irrecoverable, her family was notified. They came to the hospital yesterday as the ventilator was removed and she died.

The simple tragic fact is that many people who are anesthetized and will be removed from ventilators in the coming weeks will die.
