Look at the bottom half of the sign with the Israeli flag on top. What does it say? Where do you think it is?

It reads “Thank you Mossad”, and it was hung on a bridge in Tehran this morning by some extraordinarily brave person or people.

The Video of the Morning

Click here to see a 28 second video which documents the shooting of a terrorist at the Qalandiya Checkpoint yesterday. You’ll have to look closely–the video comes from a car cam camera–the terrorist will appear in the lower right corner after he has already been ordered to halt by shouts and a shot in the air; when he continued coming he was shot in the leg; when he continued toward the Border Guard he was shot in the stomach.

The News on the Israeli Street

The “daily” Corona (Covid-19) update . . .

The following covers the last 24 hours (from 8 am yesterday until 8 am this morning:

346,797 Israelis have been confirmed with the virus since the pandemic began last March.

There were 1,891 newly confirmed cases.

332 are in critical condition—an increase of 3

89 of the most critically ill are on ventilators—an increase of 4

2,924 have diedan increase of 7

There are currently 13,685 active Corona cases in Israel.

With the number of newly confirmed cases now approaching 2000 per day, the Corona cabinet decided last night that beginning tomorrow night (Wednesday), there will be a country-wide lockdown each night until January.  Of course, the immediate goal is to stop public Chanukah candle lighting ceremonies and private Chanukah parties.

The first shipment of Pfizer vaccine, 110,000 doses, is scheduled to arrive in Israel on Thursday evening.

The IDF will begin vaccinating soldiers during the next week beginning with pilots, medical teams, and the General Staff. It appears that combat soldiers, as always, are on the low end of the totem pole and will be the last to receive the Pfizer vaccine.

About new elections . . .

Though no one here really believes that we are about to go to a new election, the Knesset Committee on the Dissolution of the Knesset is meeting today and is pushing forward with establishing a date for one.

The options seem to be: March 2, March 9, and March 16 so as not to interfere with Passover.

The partial sale of Beitar Jerusalem is a done deal . . .

Probably the most iconic of all Israeli soccer teams, Beitar Jerusalem–home of the notorious Familia group which is often accused of racism against Arabs–has been sold, in part to a businessman from the UAE.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi has bought a 50% stake in the club for $90 million dollars and a promise to invest another $100 million in the club over the next few years.

An onerous piece of bureaucracy about to be done away with . . .

One of the worst aspects of owning a car in Israel is that beginning with year 3 of your ownership, you are required to take your car in for a mechanical check every year.

This sounds innocuous, but it is a nightmare to take the car to the shop, fight for a place in line in the checking queue, go through the checking process, and then fight for a place at the window to get the actual permit to stick on your car. On a good day, this process can take hours; on a bad day, it could take all day.

The situation is so bad that a cottage industry has sprouted up in which someone will take your car into the shop for you and get the permit.

According to the Ministry of Transport yesterday, car owners will now only have to take their car in once every two years.

Benjamin Netanyahu Right-Wing? Far From It

A map showing the location of Givat Hamatos, a new Jerusalem neighborhood to be constructed between Gilo and Har Homa.

A map showing the location of Givat Hamatos, a new Jerusalem neighborhood to be constructed between Gilo and Har Homa.

“We will build in Givat Hamatos! Nothing will stop us from building in our capital!!”

Here at OneIsrael we have lost count of just how many times Netanyahu has blathered this nonsense, but always he says it when an election is in the wind.

This afternoon comes news that not only has Netanyahu frozen any construction in Givat Hamatos, he has frozen any talk of any construction. He will not even let plans to be filed with the relevant agencies to start the discussion process.

Your humble servant was thinking about this today and wondering how in the world Benjamin Netanyahu ever became labeled as “right-wing.” For over a decade now, he has:

–refused to allow any meaningful construction in Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria

–refused to permit the construction of any new Jewish community in Judea and Samaria

–refused to apply sovereignty to Area C

–refused to allow meaningful construction for Jewish families in Jerusalem

–refused to take out Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Gaza and allowed constant missile fire at citizens of southern Israel

–refused to stand up to Jordan on the Temple Mount and kowtowed to every request by King Abdullah of Jordan

. . . and on and on . . .

The fascinating phenomenon is that while Netanyahu is far from “right wing”, his supporters most assuredly are. Apparently, they see him as the only choice to stop the slide to the left in the other Israel political parties.

Increasingly, those supporters are looking elsewhere on the true right–to the Yamina Party to find someone more in line with their ideology.

In sum, there is nothing “right-wing” about Benjamin Netanyahu.
