UPDATE 9 am Israel time:

At 6:40 am this morning, a little over two hours ago, Sderot came under rocket attack from Hamas Palestinian terrorists in Gaza. At 7:39 am, a terrorist rocket struck at the Israeli men, women, and children of the Eshkol Region.

TODAY’S BLOG:

The scene of the Presbyterian debate last night in Pittsburgh over divestment from Caterpillar, Hewlitt-Packard, and Motorola.

Your humble servant was buoyed by the vote last night of the Presbyterian Church in the United States to not divest from Caterpillar, Hewlitt-Packard, and Motorola because of their doing business in Judea and Samaria. True, the vote was extremely close with 333 voting against divestment and 331 voting for, nevertheless, for a variety of reasons the measure failed–as did a similar resolution proposed to the Methodist Church earlier this year.

Just the fact that the measure made it to the floor for a general vote was because the measure had been passed out of a committee by a vote of 36-11. In the wake of that committee vote came three striking comments from people affiliated with the Boycott, Divest, and Sanction (BDS) movement.

*Rae Abileah, co-director of CODEPINK and member of Jewish Voice for Peace applauded the committee vote: “Thank you Presbyterians for following God’s teaching, You shall not steal, in passing this overture. As a Jew, I support this interfaith work for peace and justice.”

Of course, Abileah’s sole objective in life is the theft of Israel’s good name and reputation all over the globe through her organization CODEPINK, one of the most rabidly anti-Israel groups on the planet.  Appearing in every venue possible from riding on Turkish fauxtillas to Gaza to appearing in U.S. courtrooms to demand that “We love Iran” posters be placed in U.S. government buildings, CODEPINK always colludes with BDS (Boycott, Divest, and Sanctions) and Jewish Voice for Peace.

This year your humble servant was there when Jewish Voice for Peace and Students for Justice in Palestine unsuccessfully tried to stop two Israeli speakers (one of which was an Arabic Druse woman from Dalyiat Carmel) from speaking at the University of California-Davis–and later in the year, I spoke against Jewish Voice for Peace when it teamed with BDS to unsuccessfully try to exclude a company doing business in Israel from bidding on a northern California water project.

Abileah’s presumption in praising the Committee “for following God’s teaching” and for suggesting that CODEPINK and Jewish Voice for Peace are working for “peace and justice” is ludicrous in the extreme.

*Nahida Halaby Gordon, moderator of the National Middle Eastern Presbyterian Caucus (and a self-described “Palestinian Christian”), soothingly said this about the committee vote:  “They really agonized over alienating their Jewish friends and partners. That was one of the biggest things they were worried about, but when it came to the vote, they decided that true friendship means that you can criticize with love, and it is not intended to demonize or delegitimize either Israel or Jewish community in this country.”

The vote to divest was not intended to demonize or delegitimize Israel? Hmm . . . let’s see . .  .  . the news this morning is of yet another Palestinian rocket attack on Sderot, another massacre in Syria, another Chinese crackdown in Tibet, another hanging of gays in Iran, another attack by Muslims against Christians in Nigeria, another, another, and another. But is anyone talking about divesting from the Palestinians? from Syria? from China? from Iran? from Nigeria?  The vote to divest from Israel is precisely a vote to demonize Israel among all others in the world, and by doing so, to delegitimize Israel into non-existence.

*An unnamed Israeli scientist who is a member of unnamed “human rights” group living in Pittsburgh (the site of the Presbyterian convention) made this pathetic comment yesterday about the committee vote in a letter written to a reporter for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz: “I have been involved with several peace and human rights groups and most recently came to the realization that supporting targeted divestment has become in some ways unavoidable.”

Supporting divestment (whether global or selected) from Israel is the new membership qualification for all so-called “peace and human rights groups”. It has become the “in thing” to do.

“Supporting targeted divestment has become in some ways unavoidable“?  Of course, it is avoidable if you only have the guts to stand up for what is right–which is exactly what 333 Presbyterians did last night when they rejected the fraudulent arguments of BDS, CODEPINK, Jewish Voice for Peace, “peace and human rights” groups, and their own National Middle Eastern Presbyterian Caucus.

These 333 Presbyterians should be praised and thanked for their courage. What have you done for Israel today?
