UPDATES 7 pm Israeli time, Friday, January 24 2014:
*The intense violence of Thursday has continued unabated into Friday.
Yesterday saw 38 incidents of violence directed against the Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria in the form of “rocks”, Molotov cocktails, and IEDs. Meanwhile, six mortars and two rockets were launched against southern Israel.
Today, there have been widespread Palestinian riots throughout Judea and Samaria–in many cases (especially around Bili’in) initiated by international “activists.” Sha’ar Hanegev was hit by at least one rocket three hours ago.
Have you seen even one shred of reportage about any of these attacks in the media? Of course not, but what you will see is that two Palestinians have been shot this afternoon; one near Bili’in was wounded, another who was attempting to breach the Gaza border fence was killed.
*From the neighborhood: the Egyptian Police headquarters in Cairo was rocked by a bomb early Friday, killing 4 and wounding tens of others.
In Syria, both sides are reporting the death of more than one hundred of the other side’s soldiers. None of the reports can be confirmed.
*Absurdly, Shimon Peres received the “Spirit of Davos” Award yesterday at the world economic forum. WEF founder and Chairman Klaus Schwab praised Peres for his contribution to peace as evidenced by his “vision, soul, values, heart, and his compassion, which he has shown again and again.”
Where was that compassion when Peres blocked Jonathan Pollard from attaining refuge, sent Israelis to testify against him, and then watched him languish in prison for almost three decades? Where was that vision when Peres and Rabin entered into the Oslo agreement with Yasser Arafat that led to more than 160 suicide attacks against Israeli men, women, and children?
Nowhere to be seen.

TODAY’S BLOG:
Who would have believed that such a simple cartoon in the Palestinian press would have evoked such a vicious response (no pun intended given the visage of the dog above)?
Can you guess who is who? The bearded man is Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas in Gaza. The snarling leashed dog biting a piece off of Haniyeh’s jacket is supposed to represent Islamic Jihad’s military wing, the Al Quds Battalions. And what is Haniyeh telling Islamic Jihad? “Calm down.”
According to the cartoonist, Majedah Shaheen, the cartoon depicts Hamas’s supposed efforts to rein in those shooting rockets at southern Israel.
By the end of the day yesterday, Shaheen had been bombarded with threatening postings on her Facebook page accusing her of being a Zionist agent, traitor, and a whore. By last evening, Shaheen issued the following backhanded apology:
“I wish to apologize for the cartoon I published about Hamas and the Al-Quds Battalions. My intention was to relay a message in a clear and firm manner. But there are many who prefer to deal with the issue in an artificial manner instead of making an attempt to understand the idea behind it.”
Somehow, your humble servant doubts that Hamas or Islamic Jihad get it, and wonders if Shaheen will be alive this time next week.
