UPDATES 9 am Israel time:

–>Palestinian terrorists attack again and again and . . .

Another Israeli motorist attacked in Samaria yesterday.

Another Israeli motorist attacked in Samaria yesterday.

“Rock” and Molotov attacks occurred yesterday at Al Moair, Al Khader, the Halhul Bridge, Atarot, Tekoa, Levan Al-Sharquiya, Beit Horon, Bir Nabala, Route 60 near Itamar, Route 60 at the British Police Junction, Ofra, and tens of other places.

A bus was hit on Road 431:

Aim for the "Handicapped Logo" and try to make the bus crash.

Terrorists also exploded IEDS at the Governor’s House in Abu Dis.

–>An update on “the Hevron soldier” . . .

The handcuffed soldier hauled into court yesterday.

The handcuffed soldier hauled into court yesterday.

The detention hearing for “the Hevron soldier” was the scene of surprises yesterday as the IDF military prosecutor indicated that the IDF now wants to prosecute the soldier for manslaughter, not murder. Then, in a stunning rebuke to the prosecutor, the judge ordered the soldier released to “an open base” last night (essentially released on his own recognizance but required to stay on base).

This latter decision did not sit well with the prosecutor who has scheduled an appeal in court for this hour this morning to put the soldier back in a military jail.

Meanwhile, PM Netanyahu incurred the wrath of the IDF Command by phoning the soldier’s father and expressing solidarity with the family. Even though part of his message was that the family should support the IDF judicial system, the IDF Command–which is determined to railroad its own soldier–let it be known that it was dismayed.

–>Meanwhile, have you noticed something odd about the daily Palestinian terror report posted on this blog?

Your humble servant has been loath to point it out, but ever since the Hevron incident last Thursday, there has not been a stabbing of an Israeli. Last Friday there were two thwarted stabbings, but in both cases, the terrorists were subdued before they could get their knives out of their bags.

Of course, the reason that we have been reluctant to mention this is that as soon as we do, there will undoubtedly be a rash of stabbings–but at least for now, the soldier’s actions in Hevron seem to have had a salutary effect.

–>Herzog under “preliminary police inquiry” . . .

Who me? What did I do? Yitzhak Herzog comes under police inquiry (picture: Arutz Sheva).

Who me? What did I do? Yitzhak Herzog comes under police inquiry (picture: Arutz Sheva).

The original Mr. Clean, according to the leftist Israeli media, Yitzhak Herzog–the leader of the Herzog Livni party and leader of the opposition–was informed that he is under inquiry for possible corruption stemming from last year’s election.

The investigation centers on whether money donated to the campaign’s legal department was diverted to Herzog’s account so that he could use the money to overthrow Shelly Yachimovich as party head prior to the election (which he did).

The last 24 hours have seen a hilarious display of the blame game.

At first, Herzog had his cohorts appear on Israeli media blaming the “Israeli right” for the investigation. But yesterday afternoon, Herzog blamed members of his own party whom he said want to replace him with another party head (shades of what he did to Yachimovich).

At the same time Herzog said he has nothing to hide and will cooperate fully with the police.

Sure thing.

Just like he did in the 1999 Amutot Barak scandal (also involving party funding) when he took the Fifth (an American expression meaning he refused to give evidence that might incriminate himself), and again last year when he “maintained his silence” about the V15 funding fiasco. In both of these instances, because Herzog would not cooperate, the cases had to be closed for lack of evidence.

–>The Reform and Conservative Movements jump for joy . . .

But should they?

These movements are celebrating an Israel Supreme Court decision yesterday that conversions to Judaism performed by rabbis who are not part of the Israeli conversion system must be recognized as valid.

However, the Court specifically limited such validity to conversions related to the Right of Return, and specifically limited such validity to conversions performed by orthodox rabbis in recognized Jewish communities.

What the Reform and Conservative movements hope is that the ruling is the first step down a slippery slope toward recognition of conversions performed by Reform and Conservative rabbis.

–>According to Global Finance ratings, Israel is now the 33rd richest country in the world.

Taking into account cost of living and inflation, Israel’s per capita income now sits at $34,162 per year. Of course, Israel is not in the same league as Qatar ($146,000 per capita) or Luxembourg ($94,167)–Singapore, Brunei, and Kuwait round out the top 5–but we are doing better than most.

Which is especially remarkable given our security situation.
