There were numerous “rock” attacks throughout Judea and Samaria, and two particularly bad Molotov firebomb assaults at Issawiya (11:05 pm) and Ma’ale Adumim (9:43 pm). No Israelis were physically wounded in these incidents, but a number of people were treated for trauma.
Early yesterday morning, the Israel Navy sank a ship carrying terrorists and weapons from Egypt to Gaza. Four terrorists were killed.
–>Meir Ettinger continues to languish in Israeli prison.
Ettinger, the alleged leader of “The Hilltop Youth” has now been in prison for seven months under an administrative detention order signed by “Defense” Minister Moshe Ya’alon. This means that he has never been charged with any crime, never been indicted for any crime, and continues to have limited access to legal representation and family. In fact, his only access to family is via irregular phone calls to his wife and parents.
He is imprisoned in isolation, and has now been on a hunger strike for 18 days.
You may remember that he was originally imprisoned because of suspicions he was involved in Duma fire, yet another person was charged in that case back in February.
This morning at 10:00 am, there will be a hearing at a District Court in Beersheva to let him attend the brit milah (circumcision) of his youngest child, born this week. Last night, a demonstration in Jerusalem urged his release.
Let’s hope the Court gives him a 24 hour pass to celebrate the arrival of his son.
–>Israelis flooded our national parks yesterday.
Saturday was a beautifully wonderful day of Spring here in Israel. Your humble servant and family spent hours on the Mediterranean beach in front of our house here in Ashdod along with thousands of others.
According to the National Parks Authority, more than 150,000 people visited the parks in Masada, Ein Gedi, Caesarea, Banias, and Ashkelon during the day.
–>Chinese and Indian tourists to Israel are on the increase.
As you may not know, tourism accounts for 2.5% of Israel’s GDP and 3% of our workforce. Tourists pump more than 40 billion shekels ($11 billion) in the economy each year.
In the past year, Israel has focused on the tourist market in China and India. More than 50,000 Chinese tourists and 40,000 Indian tourists arrived here in 2015, an increase of 43% and 13% respectively.
These numbers are expected to dramatically increase in the coming years. This month, nonstop flights from Beijing to Tel Aviv are beginning on Hainan Airlines, and a number of Indian airlines are in the process of negotiating agreements.
–>The Israeli “Left” continues to crumble.
The de facto head of Shalom Akhshav (Peace Now) for the last 15 years, Yariv Oppenheimer, severed all ties with the organization yesterday amidst reports that membership has plummeted, and reports of discord over the current direction of the organization.
The Secretary General of “Peace Now” is Avi Buskila who is taking the group in the direction of LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender) causes.
TODAY’S BLOG
Speaking at the nuclear security summit in Washington on Friday, U.S. President Barack Obama made a casual remark which left all of Israel flabberghasted and angered yet again about his utter hypocrisy.
When asked about whether U.S. drone strikes kill civilians, Obama said this:
“I think there has been in the past legitimate criticism that the architecture and the legal architecture around the use of drone strikes or other kinetic strikes wasn’t as precise as it should have been and there is no doubt that civilians were killed that shouldn’t have been. I think over the last several years, we have worked very hard to avoid and prevent those kinds of tragedies from taking place. In situations of war, we have to take responsibility when we are not acting appropriately or when we have made mistakes even with best of intentions.”
Say what? Architecture and legal architecture?
Let’s stop for a moment and translate this gobbledygook:
“Yes, people are right. U.S. drone and kinetic strikes have missed their targets and killed civilians. But we try very hard to prevent this from happening, and we must take responsibility when we do not hit the targets we aim for. But don’t worry, even if we accidentally kill civilians, we always have the best of intentions.“
Why are Israelis dumbfounded?
Let’s take one of our famous strolls down memory lane, back to the last war that Israel had with Palestinian Gaza in 2014.
On July 17 2014, just after that war began, Obama’s State Department issued this statement:
“Israel must take every possible step to meet its standards for protecting civilians from being killed. We will continue to underscore that point to Israel.’’
Two days later, on July 19, speaking to reporters at the White House, President Obama demanded that the IDF “conduct its operation in a way that minimizes civilian casualties.” He continued: “The US and our friends and allies are deeply concerned about the risks of further escalation and the loss of more innocent life.”
Twelve days later, on July 31, Obama spokesman Josh Earnest railed at the White House podium: “The Israeli military can and should do more to protect the lives of . . . innocent civilians . . . The shelling of a U.N. facility that is housing innocent civilian who are fleeing violence is totally unacceptable and totally indefensible.” (Of course, it later turned out that many of the supposed civilians deaths at the U.N. facility were staged by Hamas terrorists who were firing from inside and around the facility).
In early August, the State Department was at it again criticizing Israel for not doing all it could to prevent civilian casualties which the State Department spokeswoman called “heartbreaking.”
And on and on. In short, President Obama and his minions have never expressed a whit of consideration for Israel’s intentions and actions–intentions and actions which have always gone to extraordinary lengths to protect civilians.
Back on Friday, Obama wanted to blame the previous Bush Administration for beginning the drone program. But let’s remember what has happened under Obama’s exclusive command–just since last October:
*On October 3 2015, a U.S. AC-130U gunship mistakenly hit the Kunduz Trauma hospital in Afghanistan that was run by the charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF). 30 patients and 12 staff members were killed. Another 30 were critically wounded.
But never mind, Obama had the best of intentions.
*In early February, a U.S. drone strike on an Islamic State (IS) group training camp in western Libya in February killed more than 40 people–most of them women and children.
But never mind, Obama had the best of intentions.
On March 5, a U.S. drone strike in Somalia against al-Shabab killed 150 people–most of them women and children.
But never mind, Obama had the best of intentions.
We could go on and on about drone strikes in Yemen and elsewhere, but you get the point.
Seldom has there been such a malicious hypocrite as Barack Obama.
