Quote of the Day:
“We recruit scientists who are among the best in the world and let them follow their curiosity. That is what leads, in the end, to innovative and surprising new applications that shape the future.”
Professor Daniel Zajfman, President of the Weizmann Institute (see Today’s Blog for more information about the Weizmann)
The News on the Israel Street
Palestinian terrorism in the last 24 hours . . .
Numerous terror incidents took place yesterday; a few examples:
*An IDF soldier was wounded at Um Safa in a “rock” attack.
*IDF soldiers were hit with IEDs at Rachel’s Tomb near Bethlehem.
*Border police forces were attacked with “rocks” in Aida near Bethlehem.
*Israeli motorists were hit with “rocks” and Molotovs near Karnei Shomron, Abu Dis, on Route 443, beside Kiryat Arba, at Hizma, and Tekoa.
*IDF forces captured two Palestinian infiltrators near the Gaza Border fence late last night.
A suicide bomber at the Rafah Crossing . . .
A suicide bomber, affiliated with an as yet unknown group, blew himself up at the Rafah Crossing between Gaza and Egypt last night. One Hamas terrorist was killed, and others were wounded.
Of course we do not like suicide bombers, but if one has to blow himself up, doing so among a group of Hamas terrorists is a nice touch.
Likud purges its rolls . . .
It has been so secret during the past few months that there has been a movement to undermine PM Netanyahu from within his own Likud party.
But this movement is not what you think.
It is not regular party members who are trying to stage an overthrow of Netanyahu and hostile takeover of the party during the next Likud party elections, but instead a group of “new Likudniks.” Who are not Likud members at all.
Yes, you read that correctly.
In an overt attempt to take over Likud, some 10,000 new members have joined the party–without giving up their membership in their “real” parties. For example, at least 5,746 Labor party members have joined Likud as have 1,297 members of Meretz.
However, it is illegal in Israel to be a member of two parties, and yesterday the Likud administration removed more than 10,000 new members from its rolls.
What is the actual number of African “migrants” in Israel today? . . .
As you know, Israel was flooded with around 70,000 “migrants”/”infiltrators”/”refugees” (take your choice) from Sudan and Eritrea between 2007-2012, so many that Israel eventually built a fence along the Israel-Egyptian border in the Sinai.
According to the latest statistics, around 39,000 remain in Israel; most of the rest have moved on to Europe or North America. However, of those who remain, 3600 are stuck in the Holot detention facility in the Negev, and 15,000 now live in crime-infested south Tel Aviv.

Israel’s Educational Star: The Weizmann Institute of Science
It is a curious paradox that as the state of Israeli education continues to decline, the reputation of Israel’s premier research institution continues to grow.
The Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot has just been ranked as the 6th best research institute in the world in the 2017 Nature Index of Innovation.
What is even more remarkable perhaps is the fact that the Weizmann is the only non-U.S. research institution in the top 15.
Here were the top 10 (you can see the entire list here):
1. The Scripps Research Institute (San Diego, CA)
2. The Rockefeller University (New York, New York)
3. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Boston, MA)
4. University of Massachusetts Medical School (Boston, MA)
5. University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (Austin, TX)
6. Weizmann Institute of Science (Rehovot, Israel)
7. National Institutes of Health (various locations in the U.S.)
8. University of California, San Francisco (San Francisco, CA)
9. Stanford University (Palo Alto, CA)
10. Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (New York, NY)
If you are unfamiliar with the Weizmann, here is a description from its website:
“The Weizmann Institute of Science is one of the world’s leading multidisciplinary basic research institutions in the natural and exact sciences. The Institute’s five faculties – Biology, Biological Chemistry, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science – are home to scientists and students who embark daily on fascinating journeys into the unknown, seeking to improve our understanding of nature and our place within it.”
