A Glimmer Of Hope

The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

On the Gaza border:

*More extortion from the Palestinian terrorists in Gaza: Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh declared yesterday that any cut in Qatari aid to Hamas would lead to an “escalation of violence” with Israel.

This extortion attempt came after Qatari envoy Mohammed Al-Emadi informed Hamas last week that their money is running out, and that the monthly $30 million dollars Qatar is paying to Hamas will soon stop.

*Acccording to the Israeli government, the new boogeyman in Gaza is Aha Abu Alta, the head of Islamic Jihad–and close cohort of the Iranians.

Abu Alta is the man in the middle in the above photo taken at an Islamic Jihad rally in Gaza this week.

As we have written numerous times on OneIsrael, it is incomprehensible how Israel moves from one bad guy to another. There was a time when the PLO was the bad guy. Then the PLO became the good guy, and Hamas became the bad guy. Now Hamas has become the good guy, and Islamic Jihad the bad guy.

It is just plain ludicrous. The PLO, Hamas, and Islamic Jihad are all bad guys–and getting worse all the time.

In Judea and Samaria:

Palestinian terrorists attacked Israelis with Molotovs and “rocks” at the Nili Junction on Road 465, at the Horseshoe Junction near Talmud, at Beit Ummar, Al Aruv, and Amos in Gush Etzion, at Beit Sira and Turmos’ayya in the Benjamin area, at Azzun, New Givon,  and at the British Police Junction among other places.

An update on the case of Omar Shakir . . .

We reported yesterday that the High Court of Justice in a three judge panel has ruled that laughingly called “human rights activist” Shakir can be deported because of his BDS beliefs and that it should happen within 20 days.

Not surprisingly, Shakir has gone on the warpath today calling Israel a fascist state and demanding that his case be appealed to the full contingent of high court justices.

An update on annexation . . .

Ayelet Shaked’s bill has been turned in to the Knesset for consideration. However, it may not be quite as far reaching as we first reported. While it does include annexing all of the Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria and the Jordan Valley, there is some disagreement about whether it includes the roads and archaeological sites in Area C as well.

Whatever the case, we sincerely hope the bill moves forward with alacrity.

TODAY’S BLOG:

A Glimmer Of Hope

Unity talks between Likud (Netanyahu) and Kahol Lavan (Gantz) continue going nowhere. There are a number of hang-ups with the most important one being that Kahol Lavan does not want to enter into a government with Likud unless Netanyahu promises to step down as Likud head if he is indicted.

As far as Netanyahu is concerned, he is determined to remain in office even if he is indicted. More than that, he will not leave office if and until he is found guilty.

Regarding the possible indictments, one never knows whether to believe all of the leaks pouring out of the Attorney General’s Office and into the Israel mainstream media or not, but if they are to be believed, Netanyahu will be indicted for fraud and breach of trust in Cases 1000 (cigars) and 2000 (newspaper favoritism). According to the media, Mandleblit has yet to make a final decision on Case 4000 concerning bribery.

So in this morass, what could possibly be a glimmer of hope?

That glimmer of hope is being provided by Ayelet Shaked who is apparently the only adult in the room. In the last few days, she has taken it upon herself to see if some means cannot be found to make a compromise between Avigdor Lieberman and the ultra-orthodox parties.

Building upon the ideas that Lieberman is disenchanted with the idea of joining a Kahol Lavan Coalition based on the Joint Arab List, and the ultra-orthodox realization that if they do not compromise they will be left totally out in the cold, Shaked has been trying to find common ground–meeting with both sides.

If by some minuscule chance she should succeed, we would find ourselves back in the situation we were in before all the election quagmire began–a government composed of a block of 63 on the “right.” It almost borders on the delusional to think that it might happen.

We can only hope.
