The Pathetic Quote of the Day

Hello residents of Ashkelon:

Today we approved NIS 35 million to strengthen Ashkelon. As part of the plan, we will immediately renovate dozens of public shelters in the city, expand child support treatments, and also bring smart systems and special emergency equipment.

I make it clear: We will not accept any aggression from Gaza. Only a few weeks ago we eliminated the senior commander of Islamic Jihad in Gaza. I will not list all our actions – but we are prepared and ready for crushing against the terrorist organizations in Gaza.

PM Netanyahu, in a statement released today

What a sick joke. “We will not accept any aggression from Gaza”, but we are renovating your public bomb shelters, expanding child trauma treatment centers, and bringing in more special emergency equipment–precisely because we accept aggression from Gaza.

The News On The Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

On the Gaza border:

Speaking of aggression from Gaza . . .

There was yet another missile attack on the Sderot-Nir Am area last evening.

There was yet another missile attack on the Sderot-Nir Am area last evening.

No Israelis were physically wounded, but who knows how many children will have to be treated from PTSD at trauma centers?

More than 30 balloons exploded along the border this morning alone. Others made it as far as Sde Negev and Beersheva. Here is a photo from this morning of one that did not detonate because it did not quite make landfall:

It is amazing how such small explosive devices produce such large explosions.

It is amazing how such small explosive devices produce such large explosions.

In Judea and Samaria:

It has been another day of hell for Israelis driving on the roads in Judea and Samaria. There have been dozens of “rock” and Molotov attacks at such places as Road 465  near Neve Yair (one woman was wounded by shrapnel), the Avraham Hasno Junction, the Gush Etzion-Hevron Road, Al-Aruv, and Luban a-Sharqiya.

The Supreme Court rears its ugly head again . . .

In the first of a number of bizarre rulings yesterday, the justices approved a last-minute petition from the ultra-left wing NGO HaMoked to prevent the demolition of homes belonging to the murderers of Rina Shnerb.

As you remember, Rina was blown to pieces at the Dolev Spring last Fall while on a family picnic.

At the same time, the Court also froze the demolition of the homes belonging to the terrorists who murdered Dvir Sorek.

Even the B’Tselem organization which we frequently criticize here at OneIsrael was appalled at the Court’s decisions: “It is very unfortunate that the High Court again prevents the IDF from fighting terrorism. The mere prevention of the destruction of terrorists’ houses and even the delay in the destruction is a reward for terrorism and legitimizes further terrorism.”

And again . . .

If the above rulings were not enough, the Court also overturned a decision by the Israel Election Commission which had barred Heba Yazbak from running in the March 2 election.

As you may not know, Yazbak is a member of the Arab Balad Party and has spent a lifetime on social media praising such terrorist murderers as Samir Kuntar and Dalal Mughrabi as well as a host of other terrorists.

Even though such rulings are not surprising, they are nevertheless astonishing statements of the utter insanity of the Court’s willingness to promote Palestinian terror.

On the other hand, utter inventiveness . . .

What do you think you are looking at?

What do you think you are looking at?

What you are looking at is an artist’s rendering of a project that was approved yesterday involving the placing of vast solar panels on top of the Gilboa area fish farms. The project is a joint venture of Kibbutz Heftsiba and Nofer Energy.

To quote from a statement yesterday: “The joint venture includes the installation of solar panels in three fish ponds, and a total area of 14 hectares. These panels will generate 1.4 megawatts of electricity, in the form of a “net counter,” replacing the fishery’s power consumption, and the rest of the power will be channeled for the business use of the kibbutz and Nofer Energy.”

In addition to lowering evaporation of water in the ponds, the solar panels solve the problem of scarcity of land on which to place solar panels. Because of the placement in water, the project will be somewhat more expensive because of necessity of double insulation of cables and double glazing of the panels themselves.

In any case, what a great idea!

TODAY’S BLOG:

Happy Tu B’Shevat!

Today is the New Year of the Trees, and it is estimated that one million Israelis will plant one million trees. Have you eaten your seven “species” today? If not, be sure to have some wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates.

Of course, Tu B’Shevat is a major holiday for children. Here is a photo today of education minister Rabbi Rafi Peretz planting a tree with an audience of kindergartners:

PM Netanyahu got into the act as well:

Speaking of date palms, it was reported this week that seven ancient date trees have been germinated from seeds found at archaeological sites. The Phoenix dactylifera variety of Judean date palms became extinct hundreds of years ago, but has now come back to life. This particular variety of date was known 2000 years ago for its disease-fighting ability as well as its tasty sweetness.

As you may recall from a past OneIsrael blog, it was back in 2005 that a seed found at Masada was planted. The small plant that emerged some time later was named Methusaleh. Methusaleh is still growing:

By the way, the other six Judean date palms have also been named: Adam, Jonah, Boaz, Uriel, Judith and Hannah. As you can tell from the names, there are female and male trees from which it is hoped that fruit will eventually be produced.

All of these trees, including Methusaleh, are growing in the Negev community of Ketura near Eilat.
