The News on the Israeli Street
Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .
In Judea, Samaria, and eastern Jerusalem:
Palestinian terrorists using “rocks” and Molotovs attacked Israelis at Azzun, on Road 55, near Tekoa, at Luban a-Sharqiya, between Shuafat and Anata, and at the T-Junction east of Etzion Industrial Park among some two dozen locations.
In Gaza:
A Hezbollah terrorist in Lebanon crowed in a television interview yesterday that now-dead Iranian General Qasem Soleimani personally supervised the importation of weapons to Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists in Gaza.
How did he do it? According to Anis el-Nakash, the weapons were easily hidden in “humanitarian aid” that was trucked in from Israel.
The daily Corona update . . .
Please note that these numbers encompass from 8 pm yesterday until 8 pm today:
495,063 Israelis have been confirmed with the virus since the pandemic began last March.
There are 7,383 newly confirmed cases.
1,070 are in critical condition—an increase of 41
242 of the most critically ill are on ventilators—a increase of 2
3,689 have died–an increase of 38
There are currently 69,762 active Corona cases in Israel.
Are the numbers slightly better today? There were “only” 7,383 new cases (down from 10,000 a day on previous days), and “only” 38 people died (down from the recent average of 50+ a day).
However, the number of critically ill people continues to rise, and hospitals are becoming increasingly concerned that they will soon run out of bed space.

Netanyahu’s trial postponed, again . . .
In what has become a comic farce, the trial of PM Netanyahu has been delayed again.
Noting the current surge of Corona, the trial was delayed for the third time. Supposedly, it will now begin on February 8, about six weeks before the election.
Topsy turvy weather . . .
You will recall all the photos of torrential rain that we posted on OneIsrael during November and December. At the time, it seemed like it would never stop raining.
But now it has.
For the first time in the last 50 years, Israel has now gone three straight weeks in a winter season with no rain.
Plans for opening the Degania Dam near the Kineret have been put on hold.
Economic hard times . . .
The budget deficit for 2020 has now been officially recorded as the highest in the history of the country at a total of 160,000,000,000 billion shekels (about $50,000,000,000 dollars).
This is three times the gap between government revenues and expenditures than in 2019.
By the way, the 2020 deficit amounts to 11.7% of Israel’s GDP.
TODAY’S BLOG:
Vaccination Nation Or Guinea Pig Nation?
The world has been busy swooning in wonder over how Israel of all places has managed to receive an abundant supply of the Pfizer vaccine–enough to have already vaccinated around two million of our eight million citizens.
We always knew that it was not simply out of the goodness of Pfizer’s heart nor because of the money we have paid for the vaccine.
We now discover that in exchange for a price break and fast rapid delivery, Israel has agreed to provide Pfizer with access to Israeli digital medical records that go back until the year 2000.
In addition, Israel will provide Pfizer with data on the vaccine’s effectiveness including how many died, were critically ill, were vaccinated, had adverse reactions to the vaccine, and more.
In short, Israel has become the guinea pig to see if the Pfizer vaccine really can offer herd immunity and stem a surge of Corona in a country. The World Health Organization (WHO) apparently played a role in the Pfizer decision to fast track vaccines to Israel saying that Israel would be an ideal “testing ground” for “a pilot vaccination program.”
Your humble servant wonders what you, dear reader, thinks about all of this. On the one hand, it seems extraordinarily positive that Israel received the vaccines; on the other, it is disquieting to know that you are a lab rat.
