Turkey, Syria, Egypt, Lebanon . . . Everywhere You Look

UPDATES 6 pm Israel time Saturday:

An as yet undetermined number of rockets struck southern Israel last night at around 7:40 in the area of Sha’ar Hanegev and Sdot Negev. Not surprisingly, there is no mention of this attack in the Israeli or international media today–and the IDF has had no response whatsoever. Once again, as if we ever left it, we are back to the situation in which the citizens of southern Israel simply don’t exist.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Wherever you look around the neighborhood today, there is mayhem and death.

*Two car bombs have exploded in the Turkish town of Reyhanli along the Syrian border killing at least 40 Turks and wounding a hundred more. The Turks are unsure whether the attacks are related to the usual suspects–the Kurds, or to what is taking place in Syria. In true Middle East bluster, however, the Turkish Foreign Minister has warned whoever was involved “not to test the might” of Turkey.

*These attacks come a day after Turkish PM Erdogan declared that there is no doubt that the Assad regime is using chemical weapons against its own people judging from the fact that Syrian refugees coming across the Turkish border have traces of chemicals all over them.

*Meanwhile, the Egyptian government has announced this afternoon that it has captured a terror cell with 10 kg of aluminum nitrate explosives that was on the verge of carrying out a suicide attack against “a foreign embassy”. Which foreign embassy has not been specified, and which terror group has also not been specified–all the Egyptians will say is that it was “not Al-Qaeda” but it was “Al-Qaeda linked”. According to the Egyptians, one of the terrorists is an Algerian who traveled to Pakistan and Iran to be trained.

*Moving along in our “hit” parade, the movement of arms from Syria to Hezbollah continues unabated despite the recent Israeli strikes. According to reports, Hezbollah is reaching ever deeper into Syria to reach Syrian weapons repositories that it can raid. Not that it needs to–Assad declared last week that Hezbollah can have whatever weapons it wants. In a related development, PM Netanyahu announced that he is going to Moscow next week to try to convince the Russians not to sell S-300 ground to air missiles to the Assad regime.

*Speaking of Hezbollah, it announced today that it is teaming up with the PFLP- Popular Front For the Liberation of Palestine (based in Damascus) to “liberate” the Golan Heights. The PFLP issued this declaration yesterday: “The leadership of the PFLP announces that it will form brigades to work on liberating all violated (Israeli-occupied) territories, first and foremost the occupied Golan.”

Your humble servant thinks about all of these events in connection with the ridiculous presentation that we protested on Thursday night in which the anti-Israel speaker demanded that Israel “demilitarize”.  What kind of fantasy world do these people live in?

As we all know, the Middle East is a powder keg, and Israel has to always be eternally vigilant against attacks on every border–and within.
