In the past four hours, fires have continued to break out in various places such as Eleazar–and even outside of Eilat. Tens of firefighting planes continue flying over our location here in Ashdod and scooping up water to take back to the Judean Hills near Jerusalem.

8 am Fire Updates

Fires continue burning this morning despite Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan’s claim on Israeli television last night “that all fires are under control.” While it seems to be true that the largest of the fires seem to have been extinguished, a new fire broke out an hour and a half ago (at 6:30 am) in Akko.

Here are some facts related to the fires courtesy of our friends at hayehudi as of yesterday. So far:

More than 50 Palestinians have been arrested for arson. Most of these were caught after being spotted setting fires by cameras on IDF drone aircraft operated by the police.

1,784 homes were set ablaze in Haifa alone. More than half of these burned to the ground.

The hardest hit towns have been Haifa, Zichron Yaakov, Neve Shalom, Nataf, Hahamisha, Mevo Horon, and Sha’ar Hagai. Aside from the area around Zichron Yaakov and Haifa, the heaviest hit forest area was in the Judean Hills near Jerusalem.

21 firefighting planes have been involved in trying to put out the fires. Notable help has come from Russia, Romania, Spain, Turkey, Cyprus, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Croatia, France, Greece, the U.S., and Italy.

How much of Israel has gone up in smoke depends on the news source:

On the high end, local networks assess that more than 41,000 hectares (101,000+ acres) of forests and living spaces have burned. However, the Israel Parks Service puts the number much lower at 13,000 hectares (32,124 acres). Either way, the fires have been much more destructive than the horrific Carmel fire of 2010.

The remarkably good news from this disaster is that no deaths have been attributed to the fires. Scores remain hospitalized, but no one has died.
