TODAY’S ongoing BLOG:

Terror Updates (11:30 am)

From our vantage point here in Ashdod, it is difficult to find out what is going on with the fires around the country. Today is Shabbat–and no significant news will be reported before Shabbat ends tonight. The scant news that we do have indicates that more fires have been set this morning–and those fires as well as pre-existing ones are being pushed along by the high winds and extremely dry situation (rain and even snow are predicted for Israel on Wednesday).

According to people on the ground, a number of small Jewish communities have been heavily destroyed–in some places as many 50 homes have been completely burned. We also know that more than 200 Israelis have been hospitalized with fire-related problems (ranging from burns to smoke inhalation).

However, one thing we can see are the numerous huge “water planes” flying over our house from some point or points in central Israel (probably in the Jerusalem area) and then out over the Mediterranean where we can see them “scooping up” water before they return back to the site of the fires.

In the last 4 hours, we have counted 30 such planes. Firefighting teams from France, Spain, Croatia, Italy, Greece are engaged in the firefighting and equipment has come from Egypt, Jordan, and the U.S. as well.
