Today’s Blog:

The Phenomenon of Palestinian Arson Terrorism

For the moment, the Israeli media has pounced on the phrase “Fire Intifada” to describe what is taking place across Israel. In using it, they seemingly suggest that Palestinian arson is a new phenomenon.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

In a historical sense, we all know that the 1930s was an intense period of Arabic arson directed against Jewish targets in the land that was to become modern Israel. Fields, forests, and communities were torched in an ongoing rampage against Jews.

But in a larger sense, from the 1930s until today, we have often seen fire used in an attempt to kill Jews and destroy Israeli communities.

Just think about the news reported daily on this blog. Not a day goes by that we do not see Molotov firebombs being thrown at Israeli motorists, pedestrians, communities and security personnel.

And not just one or two Molotovs.

What we see everyday are firebombings on a massive scale, not to mention Palestinian riots which almost always feature the burning of tires and bonfires as fire remains an integral feature of Palestinian terrorism. But until a few days ago, the firebombings were largely confined to Judea, Samaria, and eastern Jerusalem.

What is new about the terrorism of the last few days is the concerted way that it has come to “Israel proper.” Fueled by PLO and Hamas incitement on social media, terrorists have been taking the firebombs that they normally throw at Israeli motorists, pedestrians, communities or security personnel in Judea and Samaria, and are throwing them all over Israel.

As we light the candles for Shabbat in a few minutes, Israeli firefighters are out risking their lives (with help from those of other countries) to stop the wanton destruction. But as the smoke drifts across Ashdod, we are all coming to the realization that this arson will not abate anytime soon.
