UPDATE 7 pm Israel time Wednesday:
Yoram Cohen, the head of Israel’s vaunted security service Shin Bet, was in Jerusalem today testifying in front of the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. The salient points of his presentation were:
*50% of all terror activities in Judea and Samaria are perpetrated by Hamas.
*there were 28 specific terror plots uncovered by Shin Bet in Judea and Samaria last year–18 were organized by Hamas; the most recent terror plot was disrupted “at the last minute.”
*some 2000 terrorists were arrested by Shin Bet in the past year
*there has been a marked increase in the number of “non-firearm” related terror attempts (knives, IEDS)
*on the one hand, security coordination with the PLO/PA has been “good” if it involves terror coordinated by Hamas; on the other hand, Palestinian security forces refuse to arrest or indict terrorists–preferring to issue “warnings.”
*there has been a substantial increase in efforts to target Israelis and Jews around the world–most of these attempted attacks have not been publicized.
TODAY’S BLOG:
Ehud Barak, Israel’s so-called “Defense” Minister, was at it again this morning. But before we get to that, dear reader, let’s take a short walk down memory lane and remember who Ehud Barak is:
–Barak is the man who as Prime Minister unilaterally withdrew Israeli forces from southern Lebanon in the middle of the night and handed the territory over to Hezbollah.
–Barak is the man who as Prime Minister was unilaterally ready to hand over most of Judea and Samaria and eastern Jerusalem to the PLO (and even build an office for Yasser Arafat on the Temple Mount).
–Barak is the man who as Benjamin Netanyahu’s Defense Minister has been unilaterally waging war against Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria–razing them whenever possible and branding anyone who stands in his way as a “right-wing extremist.”
So we should not be surprised by anything that Ehud Barak says or does especially when it comes to taking unilateral actions which undermine the security of the state of Israel. Yet this morning, speaking at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) in Tel Aviv, Ehud Barak displayed illogic so astonishing as to almost leave your humble servant speechless.
Joining with the head of the INSS, Amos Yadlin (himself remarkably the former head of IDF Military Intelligence), Barak outrageously declared that if negotiations with the Palestinians fail, Israel should unilaterally withdraw from Judea and Samaria.

And by what perverse Barakian logic should Israel forcibly and unilaterally remove more than 360,000 Israelis from Judea and Samaria and another 300,000 from the eastern part of Jerusalem? Because the Palestinians will never compromise on the right of return for “refugees” and because the Palestinians will never recognize Israel as a Jewish state.
Did you get that? Is your humble servant missing something?
Because the Palestinians refuse to make any concessions for peace, Israel should unilaterally withdraw.
The whole world, except for Ehud Barak and Amos Yadlin, knows that the Palestinians do not want their so-called “refugees” to return to a state of Palestine–they want them to overrun Israel so that Israel cannot be a Jewish state.
Unilaterally withdrawing from these areas will no more make the problem go away than it made it go away when Israel unilaterally withdrew from Yamit, southern Lebanon, and northern Gaza. The Palestinians will never be happy until Israel unilaterally withdraws from Israel.
The time has come for Ehud Barak to unilaterally withdraw from the government of Israel and go live with his friends in Ramallah.
