UPDATE 6 pm Israel time Tuesday:
At 4:41 pm this afternoon–just an hour and 20 minutes ago–the residents of the Eshkol region of southern Israel were sent running to their bomb shelters by sirens warning of incoming Palestinian terrorist rockets. At 3:33 pm Hamas terrorists fired a mortar into the Eshkol area attempting to kill Israeli children, women, and men. At 3:06 pm, an incoming rocket alert was sounded in the Eshkol region.

It is so refreshing to see outpourings of support for Israel. At a time when the world seems beset by attempts to denigrate Israel, boycott Israel, delegitimize Israel, and even eradicate Israel, your humble servant can only rejoice when people have the courage to stand up for what is right.
Or even to sail.
Sunday was such a day in Charleston, South Carolina when the Friendship Flotilla of 32 boats carrying over 300 people sailed from Charleston’s Shem Creek Park to the famous Battery aside Charleston Harbor and back again with American and Israeli flags proudly waving.

The flotilla was the brainchild of Friends of Israel Always–an evangelical Christian organization–and Chabad of Charleston and the Lowcountry which is based in Mt. Pleasant. Those on the water included Earl Cox, a Christian radio host, and state Representative Alan Clemmons.
Representative Clemmons authored a resolution in the South Carolina legislature last year declaring that “the same haters of Israel also hate and seek to destroy the United States” and proclaiming that “the members of this body support Israel in their natural and God-given right of self-governance and self-defense upon their own lands, recognizing that Israel is neither an attacking force nor an occupier of the lands of others, and that peace can be afforded the region only through a united Israel . . . ” The resolution passed unanimously.
The head of Chabad, Rabbi Yossi Refson, said this about the flotilla rally:
“It’s just a way of showing support for Israel . . . Charleston . . . is almost a sister city to the Holy Land. So many people in Charleston have strong feelings about Israel.” One of those who wanted to express his love for Israel was Bill Johnson who simply commented: “We’re heavy supporters of Israel. I didn’t want to miss this.”

The people of Charleston should be praised for getting up, going out, and participating in a proactive event supporting Israel. Your humble servant wants to ask you, dear reader: “When was the last time you participated in a pro-Israel event? When was the last time you waved an Israeli flag in public?

Your humble servant is doubly proud of South Carolina’s and Charleston’s amazing support for Israel inasmuch as he was born in South Carolina some years ago. My father (whom I thank for letting me know about this event) now lives most of the year in the Lowcountry along with my brother and his wife who reside in the beautiful city of Charleston.
A student from Malawi, who had worked with an Israeli health volunteer in his country battling AIDS, came up to us as we walked down the street in the UC-Davis Picnic Day Parade and wanted to carry the Israeli flag.
