Remembering Rabin: A Generation of Mendacious Liars

**As of 10 pm this evening, 27 Palestinian rockets and 2 mortars have been fired at southern Israel today.**

**As of 4:30 pm this afternoon, 24 Palestinian rockets have been fired at southern Israel today.**

**As of 10:30 am this morning, 20 Palestinian rockets have been fired at southern Israel today.**

UPDATE 9 am Israel time Monday:

It has been another violent night here in southern Israel with Palestinian terrorists in Gaza trying to kill Israeli men, women, and children by firing at least 16 rockets into Israeli communities in the Eshkol and Chof Ashkelon regions. The first red sirens sounded at 2:06 am in the Eshkol region and continued through the night and into the early morning at 5:40 am in the Chof Ashkelon region and at 6:59 am into the western Negev.

There are numerous reports of trauma.

The IDF has issued two ridiculous statements about the ongoing missile fire–26 rockets and 5 mortars in the last 48 hours since the so-called “Eid al-Adha ceasefire”

Yesterday, the IDF said that it thinks that “Hamas is doing all it can to keep quiet on the Gaza border”; this morning after another night of intensive missile fire, the IDF said that “all residents of southern Israel should stay within 15 seconds of a bomb shelter or fortified place.”

“Hamas is doing all that it can?” Here we go again with the Barak-Gantz IDF General Staff looking for preposterous excuses to do nothing.

“Stay within 15 seconds of a bomb shelter or fortified place?” Where in the world does the IDF think that southern residents live their lives?

TODAY’S BLOG:

Ever since Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated on November 4, 1995, the Israeli public and the Knesset have held memorial services commemorating his memory. Each service has normally taken the form of eulogy praising the man and extolling his “vision.”

Yesterday’s memorial service in the Knesset took a decidedly different turn as it quickly devolved into fireworks with each speaker alternately lambasting and extolling Rabin, his vision, and each other.

Reuven Rivlin, the speaker of Israel's Knesset: "There can only be one nation between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea."

Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin set the tone of the session in his opening remarks in which he said that despite liking Rabin “as a man”, Rabin’s vision as expressed in Oslo was utterly bankrupt:

“Today, almost 20 years after Oslo, we can see clearly that the idea of separating the [Israeli and Palestinian] nations has failed. Neither nation was convinced of it, and no long-term diplomatic solution was reached. Since my childhood, in 1948, we have been able to deal with the demographic threat, but in the ridiculous attempts to split the land we have failed time and again.

Rabin’s political legacy was clear: to separate the peoples by dividing the country and creating two separate entities. I disagreed with him then and I still do now. I believe the concept was erroneous. It is inapplicable. The idea of separation has failed. There can only be one state between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean because the land is so small. That state will be Jewish, democratic, and have a Jewish majority.”

Rivlin’s statement of the obvious brought down a chorus of castigation from the leftists in the Knesset.

Their comments speak volumes about the abject failure of the Israeli Left to grasp the realities of the situation, and the attempt of the Israeli left to recast themselves as “Zionists” in order to garner votes.

First came Shelly Yachimovich, who is running for Prime Minister as the head of the Labor (Avodah) party: “Rubi (Reuven), you have sent us back to the deep divide driving Israel. It’s such a dangerous position for the Zionist vision. The Israeli public doesn’t want the vision you presented. They aren’t interested in it. There is almost no person in Israel who wants to live in a binational state. Who is willing to give up the Zionist vision?”

Then came Ehud Barak who also went on the attack against Rivlin: “I am positive that Rivlin is a democrat and I suggest that he ask himself what happens when millions of Arabs vote for this assembly. Rabin understood that veering off the two-state route will be the end of Zionism not the beginning of our redemption.”

What both Yachimovich and Barak are mentally incapable of grasping is the undeniable reality that the Palestinians do not want a two state solution. It is the Palestinians who have rejected endless Israeli offers of peace. It is the Palestinians who launched a hellish decade of suicide bombers in the wake of Oslo that killed or wounded thousands of Israelis. It is the Palestinians who have launched over 1200 missiles and mortars against southern Israel since January 20th of this year–including 26 in the last 48 hours.

If history shows us anything, it is that the Palestinians are as firmly rooted to the idea of Israel’s eradication and destruction as they ever were. They never wanted peace and will never give Israel peace despite what all the Rabins, Yachimovichs, and Baraks of the world say and do.

Finally, everyone who reads this blog is aware of the dangerous duplicity of Ehud Barak–a person who should have been vanquished from the Israeli government long ago.

But the sheer hypocrisy of Shelly Yachimovich is breathtaking. Here we have a woman who admitted last week that she has voted for the Balad Party in a past Israeli election. The Balad party is  an Israeli-Arab political party whose express purposes are to create a “binational state” and oppose a “Jewish” state of Israel. For Yachimovich to now talk about her “non-binational Zionist vision” is political crassness at its best and moral depravity at its worst.

Whatever else you want to say about Rabin, at least he had the decency to stick with his deeply flawed conviction; unfortunately, he has spawned a generation of mendacious liars* among his followers.

*Your humble servant is fully aware of the redundancy of “mendacious liars” but thinks it is an apt description of Barak and Yachimovich.
