Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours
A stabbing, attempted stabbing, firebombings, “rock” assaults, and riots: it was not a peaceful Shabbat in Israel with more than 25 Palestinian terror attacks.
A Border policeman was stabbed at Har Adar–the policeman remains hospitalized today; the terrorist escaped.
Border Guards intercepted a knife-wielding terrorist on his way to the Temple Mount; no one was wounded.
Israeli civilians were targeted on Highway 40, Road 443, Surik, and the Husan Bypass Road.
Security forces were attacked with “rocks” and Molotovs in Silwan, Beit Furik, Qalqilya, Shuafat, A-Ram, Husan, Aisooyia, Qalandiya, Ras Al-Amud, Hevron, and Jalazun.
Palestinian theft in the last 24 hours
We rarely report it here on israelstreet, but instances of Palestinian theft have been dramatically increasing. From whole herds of cows being stolen in the Galilee region to sheep being pilfered in Judea and Samaria, Palestinian crime is widespread.
And the theft does not merely involve animals. Car theft is rampant. Cars are stolen in Israel, driven to Ramallah, Shechem, or Hevron, disassembled, and then sold for parts.
Yesterday, Border police noticed suspicious activity in an olive orchard belonging to the Janow Jewish community in the Sharon. When they checked it out, they discovered that two families from the Palestinian settlement of Qalansuwa (brothers with their wives and children) were engaged in wholesale theft of olives and already picked hundreds of kilograms.
Police released the wives and children after questioning and arrested the adult males.
TODAY’S BLOG:
Wikileaks and the Abominable “Peace Now”
One of the interesting emails released in the latest batch of Wikileaks was one written by
Clinton advisor Stuart Eizenstat to Jake Sullivan, the top foreign policy advisor to Clinton (read it here). In it, Eisenstat tells of a conversation he had with Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Ron Dermer:
From:seizenstat@cov.com To: Jake.Sullivan@gmail.com Date: 2015-07-02 21:08 Subject: Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer–NOT FOR CIRCULATION
He [Dermer] agrees there should be a “big tent” to combat BDS of all pro-Israel, anti-BDS groups. But he distinguishes between liberal groups like Peace Now, which he supports, and J Street, which he does not. The reason, he said, is that although they [J Street] are officially anti-BDS, they actively lobby against Israeli positions supported by a democratically elected government in Israel, and are constantly critical of Israel, rather than the Palestinians. By lobbying Congress and the Administration against Israeli positions they are “denying Israel’s right to self-determination.” They are lobbying to change what the popularly elected government of Israel supports.
On the one hand, your humble servant agrees completely with Dermer about J Street. One would be hard-pressed to find a more repugnant and reprehensible organization.
On the other, I could not disagree more about Peace Now and find it shocking that Dermer would support such a group.
Does he really think that Peace Now does not actively lobby against Israeli positions supported by a democratically elected government in Israel?
Perhaps he should think again.
Here is a small portion of what Lara Friedman, Peace Now director of policy and government relations for Americans for Peace Now had to say in the Security Council on Friday. She, along with the director of the equally abominable B’Tselem, gave a long speech excoriating Israel and supporting the Palestinians. The speech was delivered in the “special session” called by the Palestinians to discuss “Israeli settlements in Occupied Palestine” (you can read her entire statement here).
First a snippet from Friedman about the democratically elected government of Israel (emphasis mine):
“It is also not easy for me to speak here today because of the deteriorating political climate in Israel as far as democracy is concerned. For some time now we have been witnessing an ugly campaign against courageous Israeli human rights and civil society NGOs – carried out by reactionary groups in Israel and by the Israeli government itself. Campaigns that target the legitimacy of NGOs like our Israeli sister organization, Shalom Achshav – Peace Now. These groups are being targeted because their work reveals facts that some prefer to hide – facts that challenge the official Israeli government narrative.”
This is what Dermer and by extension the Netanyahu government support?
And what is the “true narrative” according to Friedman? The “true narrative” is the Palestinian narrative, as she describes in this second snippet:
“The Palestinian people have lived under Israeli military occupation for nearly 50 years. That is a fact. This occupation involves increasingly harsh violations of Palestinian rights, as individuals and as a collective. That, too, is a fact. And the settlement policies of the Israeli government are unilaterally expanding and entrenching this occupation.”
The “fact” of “Israeli military occupation” is no fact at all.
Today, some 97% of all Palestinians live in Areas A, B, and Gaza. Is Israel occupying Gaza? Is Israel occupying Ramallah? Of course not. Hamas and the PLO are.
Friedman then devolves into the usual canard of how the supposed “occupation” is undermining Israeli morality–and essentially blames Israel for the stabbing attacks carried out by Palestinian “children”:
“Here is another fact: This occupation is a threat to Israel’s security and to Israel’s very existence. Israel has the military capability to address any of its external security threats, which indeed exist. It has no effective or moral answer to the security challenges imposed by perpetual occupation, as chillingly embodied by the ongoing wave of attacks against Israelis, in many cases by Palestinian children effectively committing suicide by Israeli soldier.”
Isn’t it amazing how people who do not live in Israel are so willing to criticize Israeli morality? And to blame Israel for the moral bankruptcy of the Palestinians?
We could go on, but what would be the point?
Except to say again– as we did with the UNESCO fiasco the last two days–that the Israeli government of PM Netanyahu, this time in the form of Ron Dermer, must seriously rethink its positions on such things as the Temple Mount and Peace Now.
