TODAY’S BLOG:

The UNESCO decision . . . continued

Yesterday, in this blog, your humble servant castigated PM Netanyahu for the fact that the UNESCO decision denying a Jewish connection to the Temple Mount came about at least partially because of

1. the Netanyahu government’s tragic abnegation of sovereignty on the Temple Mount and

2. the Netanyahu government’s continual reinforcement of Muslim claims to the Mount by encouraging millions of Muslims to worship there while denying Jewish worship.

It is remarkable how PM Netanyahu, normally an intelligent person, cannot understand that the more Israel gives the Palestinians in an effort to be politically correct, the more Israel loses in the court of world opinion.

Speaking of world opinion, who voted how in the UNESCO vote?

Affirming that the Temple Mount has a Jewish past AND present: Estonia, Germany, Lithuania, The Netherlands, United Kingdom and the United States*.

Denying any Jewish link to the Temple Mount: Algeria, Bangladesh, Brazil, Chad, China, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Iran, Lebanon, Malaysia, Morocco, Mauritius, Mexico, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Russia, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan and Vietnam.

Afraid to cast a vote either way: Albania, Argentina, Cameroon, El Salvador, France, Ghana, Greece, Guinea, Haiti, India, Italy, Ivory Coast, Japan, Kenya, Nepal, Paraguay, Saint Vincent and Nevis, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda and Ukraine.

Among the “deniers”, it is remarkable how the supposedly Christian nations of Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Nicaragua, and South Africa voted against a Jewish connection because in doing so, they also were voting against a Christian connection. In essence, they were denying the “Old Testament” of the Christian Bible.

Also, what is there to say about Egypt, Russia, and China–all countries that Israel has worked to develop ties with?

For his part, PM Netanyahu was reduced to making jokes yesterday remarking: “What’s next? A UNESCO decision denying the connection between peanut butter and jelly? Batman and Robin? Rock ‘n’ roll?”

But at least one Israeli cabinet member did something other than talk about the decision.

Naftali Bennett acted.

Bennett, who is President of the Israel National Commission for UNESCO as part of his post as Education Minister, began by making this declaration:

“The organization’s decision is a denial of history which offers a back wind to terrorism. I will work with my colleagues around the world against this delusional resolution. An official announcement has been sent to the UNESCO leadership . . . The Western world must resist UNESCO and rewarding terror.”

Bennett then proceeded to sever all Israeli ties with UNESCO with his office issuing the statement: “The Israeli committee will cease all participation [with UNESCO]. There will be no more meetings with UNESCO representatives, or participation in international conferences. There will be no professional cooperation between us and an organization that backs terror.

Bennett also said that a meeting of the Israel National Commission for UNESCO will be held in the coming weeks to determine further steps to take.

Bennett’s words and actions are a refreshing alternative to the usual blather of Israeli politicians. But they do not change the fact that PM Netanyahu continues to kowtow to the Jordanian Islamic Wakf and deny basic Jewish rights of worship at Judaism’s holiest place.

Until Netanyahu changes his tune, nothing will change.

*Lest anyone think that the U.S. is always in Israel’s court, yesterday, after the UNESCO vote, the U.S. issued a scathing denunciation of Israel in the Security Council.
