Tsom Kal: Have An Easy Fast!
As you can see from the date above, today is the 10th of Tevet. It lasts from sunrise to sunset, but when it falls on Friday, the fast lasts until the end of the evening prayer and the kiddush.
Why do Jews fast on the 10th of Tevet?
It was on this date that the Babylonians began their siege of Jerusalem in 588 BCE*–a siege that lasted over a year and ended with the destruction of the First Temple.
It was also on the 10th of Tevet when Ezra died, the same Ezra the Scribe who helped Nehemiah lead the Jews out of Babylonian exile, and with Nehemiah began the process of building the 2nd Temple (according to some Jewish traditions Ezra and Nehemiah died on the same day).
Several hundred years later in the 3rd century BCE on the 10th of Av, King Ptolemy ordered that the Torah be translated into Greek and idols be erected in Judea.

Here are the numbers over the last 24 hours (from 8 am yesterday until 8 am today:
389,678 Israelis have been confirmed with the virus since the pandemic began last March.
There are 4,656 newly confirmed cases.

There are currently 31,834 active Corona cases in Israel.
The positive test rate yesterday was 4.1%–far over the 1% required by the Health Ministry in order to not have a lockdown.
As we noted in yesterday’s blog, Israel is now headed into a 2 week lockdown which may stretch into a 4 week shutting down of most businesses. The once “Green Islands” of Eilat and the Dead Sea are no more.
74,000 more Israelis were vaccinated yesterday bringing to 209,000 the total number vaccinated so far with the first shot of the Pfizer vaccine.
The Dubai Corona debacle . . .
Now that all countries in the world are classified as “red” by the Health Ministry, all returning Israeli tourists from the United Arab Emirates are required to go into a quarantine at a Corona Hotel until they can produce negative Corona test results.
Yesterday, hundreds of returning Israelis landed at Ben Gurion Airport and then refused to go to Corona Hotels–demanding an exemption to the rule.
Mass chaos resulted with the returnees claiming that they were being treated like prisoners.
Israeli planes hit Iranian targets in Syria . . .
4 Israeli jets struck several military sites near Masyaf, Syria overnight.

Esther’s Murderer Captured, Soldier Imprisoned, Young Men Released
There were major developments in three cases yesterday.
1. The murderer of Esther Horgan was tracked down and captured in Tura, a Palestinian settlement near Jenin. The terrorist is 40 years old, and immediately confessed to the barbaric crime. He has been in and out of Israeli prisons for years because of numerous terrorist offenses.
He will now begin drawing a salary from the PLO which is funded by the European Union. The salary will be at the top end of the scale because he bashed in the head of an Israeli.
2. Do you remember the bizarre sequence of events that took place earlier this month when terrorists in Gaza fired missiles at southern and central Israel? In that attack, the Iron Dome interceptors completely failed, and the IDF subsequently took no action whatsoever against the terrorists–except for the fact that a tank commander fired one round at an empty building in Gaza.
After an extensive investigation, the IDF has found the tank commander guilty of not following orders and ordered him imprisoned for 7 days. The company commander and his deputy were also found guilty and sentenced to a 14 day suspended sentence on probation.
This sentence is why IDF soldiers are afraid to take any action against terrorists–they are completely neutered by the IDF General Command.
3. A judge has ordered that the young men who were in the car crash caused by the policemen that resulted in the death of Ahuvya Sandak be released from jail pending disposition of the “case” against them. You will recall that the police absurdly want to charge the youth with “negligent murder” in the death of their friend–all in an attempt to cover up the fact that the police are responsible. As we reported yesterday, there is now a demand that the police involved in the incident be charged with murder.
