Catherine Ashton, Moral Equivalency, And “Children Being Murdered In Gaza”

UPDATE (6:00 pm Tuesday): Palestinian terrorists throwing “rocks” at Israeli vehicles on Route 55 near Azzun at 2:30 this afternoon. Both a missile and mortar were fired at southern Israel yesterday evening by the terrorists in Gaza.  The “ceasefire” continues.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Today, your humble servant would like to briefly discuss the callously immoral statement made yesterday by the European Union Foreign Affairs Commissioner Catherine Ashton concerning the heinous murders of Rabbi Jonathan Sandler, his two sons (3-year-old and 6-year-old sons Gabriel and Arieh), and 8-year-old Miriam Monsonego in Toulouse, France.

In one sense, it was just another idiotic statement from Ashton, but in a larger sense, it was just the same moral equivalence one hears all the time from liberals on the left who cannot condemn evil without making caveats that dilute into insignificance whatever it is they are trying to say.

How many times have you heard someone on the left say “I condemn this, but at the same time . . .”, or “I don’t think that what happened was right, but you have to understand that . . .”  The almost obsessive desire of people on the “left” to rationalize immoral actions by finding excuses for those actions has become emblematic of the moral sickness of our time.

Moreover, the lumping together of immoral actions into one basket as if they were all somehow morally equivalent is another favorite tactic of those on the “left”. In discussions like these, events like the Holocaust become no worse than the slaughtering of a hundred dolphins in a Japanese bay.

What Catherine Ashton does continually, however, is much worse–because she lumps real immoral actions in with ones she has fabricated–and “makes them all equal.”

Here is the shot Ashton fired yesterday that is being quoted around the world this morning:   “When we think about what happened today in Toulouse, we remember what happened in Norway last year, we know what is happening in Syria, and we see what is happening in Gaza and other places.”

Ashton’s statement is clear: children were murdered in Toulouse and in Norway; children are being murdered in Syria, Gaza, and other places. And, in her mind, there is no difference between the murderer in France and Norway, and the murderers of children in Norway, Syria, Gaza, and elsewhere.

But Ashton’s lumping together is completely disingenuous: Jewish children were murdered in France, and teenagers were shot to death in Norway, in both cases by a cold-blooded killer. Children are undoubtedly dying in Syria as a result of the Assad government’s assault on its own people (an assault that Ashton’s European Union does nothing to stop).

No children, however, are being murdered in Gaza.

Whatever is happening to the children of Gaza (and again, none are being murdered) is the sole responsibility of Hamas, the terrorist organization that rules it with an iron hand–the organization that forcibly took over Gaza after Israel withdrew from every square millimeter almost half a decade ago.

But back to Ashton. Why would the EU’s baroness buffoon have made made such a statement–aside from her usual lunacy. At the time she made it, she was at an UNRWA meeting in Brussels with “Palestinian youths”.

Far be it from Ashton to be able to make an unequivocal statement condemning the deaths of Jewish children in such a venue. After all, to the Palestinians, especially those in Hamas Gaza which are overseen by UNRWA, Jews are evil–and deserve to die.

By this morning, away from the UNRWA Palestinian venue, Ashton’s office was rushing to clarify her statement:

“The High Representative strongly condemns the killings at the Ozar Hatorah school in Toulouse yesterday and extends her sympathies to the families and friends of the victims and to the people of France and the Jewish community.  We want to make this clear, because (Ashton’s) words yesterday at the UNRWA event were grossly distorted by one of the news agencies. In her remarks, the High Representative referred to tragedies taking the lives of children around the world and drew no parallel whatsoever between the circumstances of the Toulouse attack and the situation in Gaza.”

“Grossly distorted”? “Drew no parallel”? What unadulterated horse manure. Catherine Ashton is nothing but a craven politician fighting desperately to keep her job by pandering to anyone she can pander to. It is long past time for the EU to replace her with someone who has at least a shred of moral integrity and fiber–if the E.U. can find such a person.
