TODAY’S BLOG:

Who Will Form The Next Government?

The recommendations for who will lead the next government have all been made to President Rivlin, and the result is just what we predicted months ago–no one has received 61 recommendations.

Netanyahu has 52: Likud 30 + Shas 9 + United Torah Judaism 7 + Religious Zionism 6

Lapid has 39: Yesh Atid 17 + Kahol Lavan 8 + Labor 7 + Yisrael Beitein 7

Bennett has 7: Yamina 7

No Recommendation totaled 16: Joint Arab List 6 + New Hope 6 + Meretz 6 + Raam 4

In added declarations:

*Shas and Religious Zionism have made an agreement that they will not serve under a coalition led by Bennett.

*Avigdor Lieberman (Yisrael Beiteinu) said that while he recommended Lapid, he might support another coalition so long as it is not led by Netanyahu.

*Naftali Bennett says that Yamina will partner with Netanyahu if Bennett receives the Prime Ministership in a rotation, and has the deciding vote in governmental decisions, and if right wing parties hold the Ministries of Justice, Finance, Education, and Homeland Security. Otherwise, Bennett says that he is looking to form a coalition with Yesh Atid, Gideon Sa’ar, Avigdor Lieberman, and Benny Gantz.

*The Joint Arab List said that it would support Lapid if he had 55 other supporters, and if he would not have any right-wing parties in his coalition.

So where does this all leave us?

In the predicted mess.

Barring some miracle, it seems highly unlikely that any person will receive 61 seats which means that the only way to avoid a 5th election is for someone to form “a minority” government with support of parties “on the outside.”

President Rivlin has said he will make an announcement in the next 48 hours–perhaps sooner–about who he will task with forming a government.

Until then, all kinds of backroom negotiations, horsetrading, and favor-promising will shift into high gear.

In other words, Israeli politics as usual.
