The News on the Israeli Street

The war in Judea and Samaria.

Shooting attacks:

Palestinian terrorists opened fire at “a number of crossings” last night according to the Hamal military reporter.

Palestinian terrorists in a passing vehicle opened fire on IDF soldiers again in Hawara. Two soldiers from the Hesder Yeshiva in Sderot were wounded, one critically the other seriously. This morning both soldiers are listed in “stable” condition. There is a manhunt for the terrorists.

Palestinian terrorists opened fire on IDF troops at the Jalameh Checkpoint near Jenin. No Israelis were physically wounded; the terrorists escaped.

IED, Molotov, and “rock” attacks:

Palestinian terrorists attacked Israelis at Singil, Hawara, between Yitzhar and Sela IDF outpost, between Ariel and Tapuach, in the vicinity of Marda, near Tekoa, at Luban al-Sharqiya, and at numerous locations in Gush Etzion.

Terrorism on the Temple Mount . . .

Following the plastering of terrorist flags all over the Temple Mount yesterday, hundreds of Palestinians barricaded themselves in the Al-Aqsa Mosque and elsewhere.

Israel police entered the Mount last night to clear them out.

Unbelievably, the police expressed surprise that the barricading of Palestinians inside the mosque was done “in complete contrast to the agreement with the Islamic Wakf for Ramadan and the rules of the place.”

Your humble servant doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

How can it be that the Islamic Wakf has violated every agreement with Israel for decades and now the Israel Police are surprised?

We can expect continued clashes on the Mount all through Ramadan and beyond.

A follow up to yesterday’s post . . .

Yesterday, we posted this advertisement that appeared in the Ha’aretz newspaper that we captioned:

Finally, newspaper ads are now appearing that harshly criticize members of the anti-government movement. This one castigates (l-r) former Chief of Staff Dan Halut, former PM Ehud Barak, and Yair Golan for calling on soldiers to refuse to serve.

This morning, Amos Schocken–the editor of Ha’aretzhas profusely apologized to his readers that the advertisement appeared in the newspaper:  “I apologize. A serious error in our commercial department that, contrary to the standing order to pass every political ad for approval, in this case they did not do it, and the ad went in without first being passed to my or the editor-in-chief’s approval. It is clear to me that we would not have approved a False ad like [this one]. The country is resolute in the fight against the dictatorship until victory.”

Ha’aretz is yellow journalism of the worst order.

TODAY’S BLOG

Galant Tries To Wreck The Judicial Reforms

When the new government was formed, we rejoiced that finally the abominable Benny Gantz would be replaced as Defense Minister. And when PM Netanyahu chose Yoav Galant to take his place, we were doubly happy. Galant, we thought, would reverse the draconian actions that Gantz was perpetrating on the Jewish communities of Judea and Samaria as well as bring a steadying hand to the IDF.

Unfortunately, the last three months have seen a different Galant. Not only has he continued Gantz’s actions in Judea and Samaria even to the point of actively resisting Coalition agreements, but also he has not shown an ability to steady the IDF in the face of the current “refusal” movement by reservists, pilots, and now regular soldiers.

Last night, the real Galant stepped forward in a press conference he called for himself.

Standing between two Israeli flags as if he were the Prime Minister (Netanyahu was still in England at the time), Galant let it be known that he no longer supports continuing the legislative process to enact the judicial reforms:

“I have never encountered the intensity of anger and pain as I see now . . . The rift in society is penetrating into the IDF and this is a clear, immediate and tangible danger to the security of the state. I will not give my hand to this. We need a change in the judicial system. Such changes are made through dialogue and dialogue. A victory for one of the parties will be the loss of the State of Israel. We must lead a participatory and unifying process. We must stop the process.”

In short, Galant has gone over to the dark side and adopted the anti-government’s position exactly “We must stop the process” and have “dialogue and dialogue” afterwards. The strategy of stopping the process and going into endless dialogue is designed to wreck the judicial reforms.

Fellow Likud Knesset Legislator Yuli Edelstein quickly praised Galant: “I thank my friend, Minister of Defense Yoav Galant, who joined the path I have been leading for weeks.” Since last night, at least 1 more member of the Coalition has signed on to the call to halt the reforms. The question is whether the bleeding can be stopped so that the Coalition will be able to muster 61 votes when the Judicial Selection Bill comes up for votes today and tomorrow.

Meanwhile the Opposition was quick to hail the “cracks” in Likud. The egregiously disgusting Ehud Barak crowed: “Galant’s words are a step in the right direction and a huge achievement of the protest. The protest must increase and intensify. This is an achievement of the pilots, the military personnel, the special units, the cyber and all the reserve personnel. Who will join Galant Edelstein . . . and others and actually stop the legislation. The cracks there will deepen . . . Together we will win.”

Labor Party head and one of the leaders of the anti-government movement Merav Michaeli had this to say after being asked if she would be willing to begin negotiations following Galant’s statement about stopping legislation: “Our goal is elections.”

The ousting of Netanyahu and the Coalition government has always been the goal of the “protesters”.

It will be extremely interesting to see what happens this morning when PM Netanyahu returns from the U.K. Will Galant be sacked and possibly be replaced by Avi Dichter? Will Netanyahu cave in to Edelstein and Galant?

Stay tuned for further developments.
