The News on the Israeli Street

The war in Judea and Samaria.

Another horrific attack took place in the Jordan Valley at the Hamra Junction yesterday not far from the location where the Dee sisters were murdered in April.

A family (husband, wife, two children aged 6, 9)  traveling south after a vacation in the north, was cut off by a car with Palestinian license plates traveling in the opposite direction that crossed the lane in front of them. Two meters from the Israeli car, a terrorist in the Palestinian car got out with an M16 and started shooting.

The wife was moderately wounded, but miraculously the rest of the family was physically unscathed.

Elsewhere:

Palestinian terrorists opened fire on IDF forces in Burkin.

Palestinian terrorists opened fire on IDF forces in Kablan, south of Shechem.

IED, Molotov, “rock” attacks:

Palestinian terrorists attacked Israelis at some 30 locations including on Road 60 near Singil, at the Maccabim Checkpoint, on Road 443, on the Gush Etzion-Hevron Road near Beit Omer, and on Road 55 near Azzun.

A boycott of the boycotters . . .

To no one’s great surprise, a group of companies led by leftist owners has decided to pool their resources to try to bankrupt Channel 14.

As you may not know, Channel 14 is Israel’s only conservative television channel–and has been rapidly rising in ratings in recent month. One program in particular, “Patriots” has become an audience favorite from 8:45-10:00 pm every evening.

The companies referred to in the first sentence have announced that they will no longer advertise on Channel 14–and have set out to convince others to follow suit.

In response, Channel 14 is now going after those countries urging a boycott of their products. First on the list is the giant Israeli company “Strauss”, long a producer of favorite Israeli food products.

Yesterday posters went up all over orthodox neighborhoods telling people not to buy Strauss products:

Anti-Strauss flyers plastered on billboards in the orthodox city of Bnei Brak last night.

More than this, people have been terminating Strauss subscription contracts, such as those for Tami 4 water, in droves this morning.

To the point that Strauss has shut down its customer contact telephone lines.

What goes around comes around.

Here in our home, we dumped all Strauss products we had in our refrigerator and pantry in the garbage last night and encourage others to do the same.

TODAY’S BLOG

A Moment of Truth Before The Moment of Truth

This morning, the Israel Supreme Court in its other function as the Israel High Court of Justice is hearing the case concerning the so-called Incapacitation Law which passed the Knesset on March 23.

The law calls for:

–a prime minister to be removed only in the case of being declared unfit for physical or mental health reasons. If so declared, the prime minister must acquiesce to the declaration after which the Knesset Home Committee must approve its activation by a 2/3 majority.

–in the case that the prime minister is unwilling or unable to acquiesce to the declaration, his or her removal can be forced with the approval of a 75% majority of the government followed by a vote of the Home Committee.

Got all that?

The key point is that the law is an Amendment to a Basic Law.

It was made this way so that the High Court could not rule it invalid. In the past, the Court refused to even receive any petition against a Basic Law or an Amendment to a Basic Law.

Yet that is exactly what the Court is doing this morning.

And if it does rule the Amendment invalid, that means that the Court will also feel empowered to do the same with the Reasonableness Amendment which comes before it on September 12.
