Corona . . .

About the only thing on everyone’s mind these days in Israel is the Corona virus. There are now more than 20 cases–virtually all of which were brought back from Europe by Israeli travelers.

One person is in critical condition and is on a respirator.

The Health Ministry continues to take steps to try to barricade the country, but it is like closing the barn door after the horse has escaped.

One major European and Asian airline after another has announced cancellation of flights to Israel. The latest today was Lufthansa after Germany was added to the list of European countries on the Health Ministry “isolation list”. Other European countries include France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, and Spain. It won’t be long until no one coming from Europe will be allowed entry.

On top of this, the Health Ministry is already recommending that travelers from the U.S. also be put under quarantine; however, the government has so far refused on the grounds that such a quarantine would have severe political and economic repercussions.

The Eurovision bright spot . . .

In the midst of the Corona bad news and election quagmire, the competition for who and which song will represent Israel in the Eurovision song contest this year has been decided.

Eden Allene will represent Israel.

Eden Alene will sing “Fekir Libi” which includes lyrics in Hebrew, Amharic, English, and Arabic.

We wish her the best of luck!

The New Leftist Plan To Take Over The Government

The black flag that is being raised all over Israel symbolizing the left’s attempt to take power.

In a brazen yet clever ploy to take over the government, the Israeli left has apparently formed a plan to thwart the vote of the people.

Let’s recall what the current situation is. Neither the right nor the left currently has 61 seats necessary to form a coalition.

In the election this week, the parties on the Israel right (Likud, Shas, United Torah Judaism, and Yamina) received 58 seats–and possibly 59 depending on the surplus vote calculation.

The parties on the Israeli left (Blue and White, Meretz/Labor, and the Joint Arab List) have 55 seats.

The remaining 7 seats belong to Avigdor Liberman’s Yisrael Beiteinu Party. Yisrael Beiteinu is actually a party on the right–even more “right” than Likud. However, because of Liberman’s animus against PM Netanyahu, it is stridently anti-Netanyahu.

Liberman will not let his party form a coalition with Blue and White which would make Benny Gantz prime minister because he would never be in a government that includes the Joint Arab List, but it appears he is perfectly willing to enter into an unofficial 62 seat “anti-Bibi” blocking formation to try to take control of the Knesset.

So what is the apparent plan?

1. The anti-Bibi forces will not try to form a government.

2. They will vote to replace Yuli Edelstein as Knesset Chairman and replace him with someone on the left.

3. They will then vote to reorganize Knesset Committees that will wrest power away from Netanyahu appointees. For example, they will remove the power of the ultra-orthodox on the Finance Committee.

And on and on.

Until, in effect, they run the government during the next 4 months leading to the next election.
