The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

The following information comes to OneIsrael via hakolhayehudi (the Voice of Israel):

*In May and June, the IDF recorded 630 Palestinian terrorist attacks in Judea and Samaria.

*In May, there were 316 attacks: including 243 incidents of “rock and Molotov” attacks, 67 incidents of throwing IEDs, and 6 incidents of planting bombs or throwing grenades.

*In June, there were 314 attacks including 35 in which grenades or other explosives were thrown at Israelis.

Of course you can do the math: the IDF figures show an average of 10.5 terror attacks per day. The problem is that this is just the tip of the iceberg. It does not include all of the reports from residents on the ground nor does it include the hundreds of incidents which are not reported.

The daily Corona update . . .

As of 8 am this morning (Sunday): There are 65,791 confirmed casesan increase of 1,806 since this time yesterday

32,157 of these confirmed cases have recoveredan increase of 5,024

316 are in critical conditionan increase of 5

97 of the most critically ill are on ventilators—an increase of 2

486 have diedan increase of 14

There are 33,634 active cases.

The truly bizarre number above is the huge jump in “recovered cases”. Last week, we saw the same thing: suddenly out of the blue, the number of recoveries jumped by thousands on one day. Obviously, someone in the Health Ministry is fudging the numbers.

About that security incident in the north yesterday . . .

In yesterday’s blog, we wrote this:

” . . . it is being reported that the IDF has video documentation of what happened yesterday but is not releasing it out of fear that it might provoke Hezbollah into further action. It also may be true that the video is not being released because it is an embarrassment to the IDF and Israel.”

It is looking increasingly like the latter statement may be true.

A number of people are wondering aloud this morning if there really was an incursion by Hezbollah at all, and that perhaps those thought to be Hezbollah terrorists were in fact misidentified.

TODAY’S BLOG:

A New Sheriff In Town: Ronni Gamzu Takes Control of Corona?

New “Coronavirus Commissioner” Ronni Gamzu started work yesterday with a flurry of steps which, in your humble servant’s opinion, were lackluster at best.

Here are the main steps of the new government response to the virus:

1. The IDF will take over testing and tracing.

Anything is better than the haphazard system in place now in which some people have to wait for weeks to get tested and others never get tested at all. It remains to be seen if having the Army in control will produce more consistency.

2. The number of tests will increase to 60,000 a day in two months; 100,000 a day by December.

There are 8,000,000 people in Israel. At 60,000 a day, we would reach 8 million in about 4 months (133 days). At 100,000 a day, we would reach 8 million in 80 days.

If the last few weeks have shown anything, it is that increased testing is not decreasing the existence or spread of the virus. It is good to know who is infected and who is not, but the pandemic will not end because of testing.

3. Be in touch with hospitals to ensure that there is not overcrowding.

All of them are already overcrowded.

4. Form a new panel of experts to advise about the plan.

Really? A new panel of experts?

5. Improve enforcement.

Israel police have been doing a decent job of enforcement; however, there are not nearly enough police.

6. Provide incentives to “green cities” and place restrictions on “red cities.”

This will encourage lying about statistics in order to be classified as green, and discrimination against those that are red.

To top these new steps off, Gamzu gave us this lollapalooza yesterday: “The infection rate is lowering; we are almost there.”

Say what?

Where are we almost? Isn’t Gamzu aware of the actual statistics being issued daily from the Health Ministry? There is no indication that the infection rate is lowering: on Monday (the last day on which we have full data), 28,224 people were tested of which 2,057 tested positive–an infection rate of 7.4%.

Let’s give Gamzu the benefit of the doubt, but the steps he outlined and the interpretation of the data he gave do not bode well.
