Quote of the Day

“Turkish traces still exist in Jerusalem. In other words, Jerusalem is our city, one of our cities.”

Turkish PM Erdogan, in a speech to the National Assembly of Turkey yesterday

Erdogan followed the absurd speech with this absurd graphic posted to his social media account:

The News on the Israeli Street

The daily Corona (Covid-19) update . . .

There are 258,820 confirmed casesan increase of 5,430

185,122 of these confirmed cases have recoveredan increase of 5,654

839 are in critical conditionan increase of 18

203 of the most critically ill are on ventilatorsan increase of 10

1,633 have diedan increase of 11

There are now 73,798 active Corona cases in Israel.

For the first time in a long time yesterday, the number of people who have recovered outpaced the number of newly confirmed cases–and the number of those who died dramatically decreased. However, as we always point out here on OneIsrael, one should always take Friday, Saturday, and Sunday numbers with a grain of salt because of the reduced amount of testing that goes on.

About the virus spread . . .

Two groups most commonly associated with virus spread were at it again yesterday.

First, the anti-Netanyahu demonstrators outside of the Netanyahu residence in Jerusalem were shocked when the police showed up and began fining each person 500 shekels for violating the 1 km rule (no protesting farther than 1 km from your home).

The protesters presented police with a “lease” showing a residence within a 1 km radius, but the police weren’t buying it. One Black Flag leader cried: “The Jerusalem police have decided to harass our encampment. They decided for no reason not to believe the lease and announced that they would come to the encampment every hour and hand out reports of NIS 500 to each of its residents.”

Your humble servant has only one thing to say: “Bravo to the police!”

Second, we had multiple examples yesterday of young people in Tel Aviv not wearing masks and not engaging in social distancing. One photo from the Lewinsky Market area tells it all:

Notice that not one single person is wearing a mask.

Notice that only three people in this photo are wearing a mask.  Can you spot them?

The return of El Al? . . .

27-year-old yeshiva student Eli Rosenberg completed his takeover of control of El Al yesterday by purchasing 42.88% of the company. Rosenberg’s company “Eagle Wings Aviation” immediately moved to replace El Al’s Board of Directors with a management team. Eventually a new Board will be appointed.

Eagle Wings Aviation issued this statement:  “We intend to return EL AL to fly on a significant scale while expanding the flights on the profitable routes, and adding new destinations later related to the peace agreements signed by the State of Israel. We have a critical task ahead of us and, God willing, will create a secure future.”

Good luck to Eagle Wings–it will be good to see El Al back in the air again.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Chag Sameach!

Today is the first day of Sukkot–one of your humble servant’s favorite holidays. Here in Israel virtually every home has a sukka and those sukkot are as varied as you can imagine. Some are made of wood, some of cloth, and some of a metal; some are colorful and highly decorated, while others are very simple.

Whatever the case, a festive spirit pervades the country–even in the midst of the Corona pandemic and its accompanying restriction that no one but immediate family may enter a sukka.

But there is no reason that you cannot experience a zoom sukka with family and friends. Today, I invite you to our sukka here in Ashdod; tomorrow, I’ll show you some photos of other sukkot in the area.

The food is ready and the table is set. Your humble servant's wife invites you to take a seat in our sukka!
