TODAY’S BLOG:

 Omar Abdulmajeed As’ad:

The Newest Cause Celebre of the PLO and Its Supporters

As you have no doubt read by now (because the international media delights in such cases), Omar As’ad was an elderly man who died after being detained by IDF troops two weeks ago.

Just how elderly As’ad was remains unclear–but he was apparently between 78 and 80 years old.

Here’s what happened.

As’ad was driving his car at around 3 am in his hometown of Jiljilya.

Because his car looked suspicious, he was stopped by IDF soldiers of the Kfir Brigade’s Netzah Yehuda Battalion who asked to see his driver’s license or ID.

He had neither.

When As’ad was asked to get out of the car, he resisted and began shouting and yelling, drawing unwanted attention to the military operation that was underway.

The soldiers subsequently handcuffed and blindfolded him, and put a piece of cloth over his mouth.

There the story diverges.

According to the soldiers, As’ad was released 30 minutes later–a time frame confirmed by another Palestinian who was detained at the same time.

According to the PLO, As’ad was left in his situation until morning.

Whichever the case, As’ad was found dead later in the morning though where his body was found is not clear.

An autopsy performed several days later by a Palestinian doctor found that he had died of a heart attack.

Reaction has been swift–on the basis of no more than supposition. The commanders of the IDF force have been reprimanded and lost all chance of promotion. As usual, they have been thrown under the bus by IDF Chief of Staff Kochavi who lamented the “lack of values” shown by the soldiers.

News media around the world have condemned “the brutal assault” on As’adthough there is not one scintilla of evidence that there was any assault at all.

And, because As’ad held American citizenship, the U.S. State Department has weighed in demanding that the soldiers be criminally charged.

In sum:

1. There is no question that As’ad was driving at a strange time of night in an area where a military operation was taking place.

2. There is no doubt that he had no identification.

3. There is no doubt that he resisted detention.

4. There is abundant doubt as to how and where he died.

5. There is no doubt that the soldiers will be court-martialed, found guilty, and chucked into a military prison–if for no other reason than the Biden Administration will demand it and our IDF General Command and our government will do nothing to support our soldiers.
