At sundown tonight, Israel’s Memorial Day, Yom Hazikaron begins. On this day we remember those who fell in defense of our country. As we noted in yesterday’s blog, 24,213 soldiers have sacrificed themselves for Israel.

On this day we also remember those who have been murdered by terrorists. That number now stands at 4,255 including 31 in the past year.

For this reason, the official name of Israel’s Memorial Day is:

Yom HaZikaron LeHalelei Ma’arkhot Yisrael ul’Nifge’ei Pe’ulot HaEivah–יוֹם הזִּכָּרוֹן לְחַלְלֵי מַעַרְכוֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל וּלְנִפְגְעֵי פְּעֻלּוֹת הָאֵיבָה, translated as ‘Memorial Day for the Fallen Soldiers of the Wars of Israel and Victims of Terrorism’.

Ceremonies honoring those who have died will be held in cemeteries all across Israel, and tonight at 8 pm, sirens will sound and all will stand at attention to honor the fallen. We suggest that you do the same wherever you are.
