The U.S. blocked two attempts by the Kuwait, Indonesia, and South Africa to pass a Security Council Resolution condemning Israel for the destruction of the 12 buildings in the Sur Bahur neighborhood (aka Wadi Al Hummus) of eastern Jerusalem yesterday.
Unlike what has been reported in the international media, the buildings were located in a “gray area” between Areas A and B. As such, they were not under the purview of the PLO–which wanted the buildings there to provide cover for terror attacks in Jerusalem.
Sur Bahur and Khan Al-Ahmar . . .
The situation surrounding Sur Bahur calls into question our government’s abject failure in dealing with Khan Al-Ahmar in the E1 area near Ma’aleh Adumim.
Just as with the illegal buildings in Sur Bahur, the Israeli Supreme Court authorized the destruction of the illegal Palestinian settlement long ago.
In the episode this week, Israeli equipment was quickly moved in and the buildings were destroyed before the U.N., E.U., and all of their cohorts had time to utter a discouraging word.
By dragging out the destruction of Khan Al-Ahmar, the government has opened Israel up to endless criticism and condemnation. We should have destroyed the Palestinian settlement in one afternoon, and moved on. Let the leftists of the world complain . . . after the fact.

The Mad Scramble Is On

As the deadline for submitting election lists approaches on August 1st, there is a mad scramble to form partnerships on both the left and the right.
This morning comes news that Meretz (under the leadership of Nitzan Horowitz), Stav Shafir (formerly the number 2 person in the Labor Party), and Ehud Barak (head of the new Democratic Party) have all signed an agreement to run together under the rubric of the “Democratic bloc”.

According to the agreement, Horowitz will be number 1 on the list, Shafir number 2, and Barak number 10 (this virtually ensures that Barak will not make it into the Knesset). Of course, Barak was desperate to form a partnership with another party because the latest polls yesterday showed that his new party would not pass the electoral threshhold for Knesset representation.
Apparently, all three of this group are still trying to woo the Labor/Bridge Party of Amir Peretz and Orly Levy to their leftist consortium.
Meanwhile, the situation on the Right remains confused. Remember that there are 4 small parties:
The New Right now headed by Ayelet Shaked
Bayit Yehudi (Jewish Home) the party that was first started by Shaked and Naftali Bennett before they broke away to form The New Right
National Union headed by the current Education Minister Rafi Peretz
Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power), headed by Michael Ben Ari who has been ruled ineligible for the Knesset because of his “Kahanist” ideology
You may recall that in the April election, Bayet Yehudi, National Union, and Otzma Yehudit all joined forces and won 5 seats in the Knesset. The New Right did not receive enough votes to have any representation.
Now, polls show The New Right doubling in strength since Ayelet Shaked became its leader last week. She has made it clear that she would like to see all four parties running as one under her leadership.
However, PM Netanyahu–whose animus against Shaked is well known–has other plans. Apparently he is trying to put Bayet Yehudi, National Union, and Otzma Yehudit together again without The New Right–going so far yesterday as to offer two ministerial posts in the next government to Bayet Yehudi and National Union if they go with Otzma again.
If all of this sounds confusing, it is because it is.
Multiple parties, multiple egos, multiple demands, multiple conditions: the mad scramble is on!
