Where Have We Heard That Before?

“We announce the leadership’s decision to stop implementing the agreements signed with the Israeli side.”

PLO Chairman Mahmoud Abbas was speaking in Ramallah on Thursday supposedly in response to the building demolitions that Israel carried out in the Sur Bahur neighborhood in Jerusalem.

Of course, it immediately turned out that no such decision had really been made by the PLO; Abbas blathered a few minutes later that there might be selective cessations of parts of agreements, and that in any case, a committee would have to be formed to implement the decisions.

So where have we heard this before?

Hmm. In reality, we hear the threat to end all contacts with Israel all the time. In fact, Abbas used exactly the same speech to make exactly the same announcement on October 14, 2014; December 24, 2014; February 22, 2015; May 25, 2018; September 7, 2018; November 1, 2018; January 6, 2019; and three months ago on April 22, 2019.

The PLO never did end any “contacts.”

Why not?

Simple.

Because if the PLO breaks all arrangements with Israel, then that means that all security arrangements will be voided, and that means that Israeli forces will stop arresting Hamas terrorists in PLO territory every day and night, and that means that Mahmoud Abbas and the PLO will be deposed in short order.

So, no PLO security arrangements with Israel, no PLO and no Mahmoud Abbas.

A funny aside:

In the same speech, Abbas turned the English language on its head once again when he termed the Bahur demolitions as “war crimes par excellence.”

In other words, Abbas would have us believe that destroying the buildings was “the best war crime” Israel has ever carried out!
