–>Israeli tomatoes being destroyed . . .

In what can only be described as a ridiculous situation, Israeli tomato farmers are being forced to destroy their crops. This morning, one such farmer in Moshav Ein Tamar announced that he is destroying 120 tons of tomatoes.

Why? Because Israel has allowed tomatoes from Turkey, Jordan, and Gaza to flood the market. Prices have dropped precipitously.

Tomatoes from Jordan.

Tomatoes from Jordan.

As the farmer pointed out, the wholesale price of tomatoes is now between .9-1.30 shekels per kilogram; however, the cost to pick and ship the tomatoes is 1.2-1.3 shekels per kilogram, and on top of that 20% must be paid in fees. When imported tomatoes only cost about 1.5 shekels per kilo, you begin to see the problem.
