170 Missiles in the last 12 Hours: How Did We Ever Get To This Point?

FINAL UPDATE 10:00 PM Thursday

Since our last update nearly nine hours ago, there have been missiles and mortars fired at the southern border communities at:

9:15 pm (2 missiles exploded on a beach in Ashkelon and another was intercepted by the Iron Dome);

9:13 pm (3 missiles were fired at the Kerem Shalom Crossing);

8:10 pm ( 2 missiles targeted Nirim and Ein Hashlosha);

6:29 pm (2 missiles hit near Nirim and Nahal Oz);

5:34 (1 missile hit near Beersheva)

4:18 pm (2 mortars hit the Karni Crossing);

2:48 pm (3 mortars struck near Kissufim);

2:00 pm (3 missiles exploded in the Eshkol Region)

The 18 above missiles and mortars brings the total fired from Gaza since yesterday evening to 256. Of the above strikes, the most important one was at Beersheva because it shows that Hamas is beginning to use longer range missiles.

The so-called “security cabinet” has just finished a three hour meeting with no announcement of what our response will be to the continuing missile assault.  Israeli TV is reporting that the unanimous cabinet consensus is that we should not send troops into Gaza. Your humble servant heartily agrees; however, I feel that we should embark on a targeted assassination campaign against the Hamas leadership.

We will see what the night brings.

UPDATE 1:15 PM Thursday

It sounds like a broken record. The missile attacks on southern Israeli border communities continue with three more barrages since our last update: at 10:47 am, 12:18 pm, and 1:10 pm.

There are no reports of IDF responses. Hilariously, Israel has warned Egypt that it had better get Hamas to stop shooting missiles by 4 pm this afternoon, or we will resume fire.

The most critically wounded Sderot woman from last night is breathing on her own for the first time since the attack.

UPDATE 10:30 AM Thursday

The missile attacks on southern Israeli border communities continue with a number of barrages in the last few hours. It has also been reported that some 32 mortars were fired at our soldiers last night.

The total number of missiles and mortars fired from Gaza now stands at 232. Meanwhile, the number of Israeli men, women, and children wounded also is climbing upward with more than 20 treated at Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon alone.

For unknown reasons, the IDF has not attacked in Gaza since 6 am this morning, and the Deputy Minister of Defense has issued an unbelievable statement noting that Israel is “continuing negotiations with Hamas despite the missile fire.” Meanwhile, Egypt and the U.N., as usual, are calling for a cease fire.

Our politicians, aka our so-called “Security Cabinet”, continue to sit in Jerusalem, bluster, and twiddle their thumbs.

How Did We Ever Get To This Point?

From 7:00 pm last night until a few minutes ago (7:00 am)–a space of 12 hours–Palestinian terrorists have fired more than 170 missiles into southern Israel.

The Iron Dome system has intercepted around 18 missiles, but many missiles have not been intercepted and have struck kibbutzes, moshavs, and towns in the Gaza border region. Particularly hard hit was Sderot.

As of this hour, at least 10 Israelis have been wounded–some critically–and hundreds more have been treated for trauma. A number of women were sent into premature labor. Apartment buildings, individual houses, cars, and even motorcycles have been struck.

The IDF is utterly powerless to stop the onslaught. This morning the IDF released this graphic showing some of the 140 targets the air force has struck in Gaza. It should be noted that all of the targets were empty buildings or empty land, or in IDF jargon “training complexes”, “storage rooms”, “equipment warehouses”, and “meeting places.”

No terrorists have apparently been hit though there has just been a report that one missile launching squad was hit.

Imagine that you live in a community in southern Israel within 10 miles of the Gaza border. This is when you heard incoming missiles sirens last night:

7:37 pm; 9:23 pm; 9:27 pm; 9:42 pm; 10:05–10:08 pm; 10:23 pm–10:29 pm; 10:36-37 pm; 10:39 pm; 10:41 pm; 10:46-48 pm; 10:50-52 pm; 10:57-58 pm; 11:01 pm; 11:05-09 pm; 11:15-17 pm; 11:23-26 pm; 11:37 pm; 11:44 pm; 11:49-50 pm; 11:53 pm; 12:04-08 am; 12:14-17 am; 12:26-30 am; 12:40-42 am; 12:45-48 am; 12:54 am; 12:57-59 am; 1:02-05 am; 1:11-13 am; 1:31-36 am; 2:00-04 am; 2:18-22 am; 2:32-34 am; 2:54 am;  2:59-3:03 am; 3:54-57 am; 4:05-4:09 am; 4:14-21 am; 4:24-30 am; 5:16-18 am; 5:27 am; 5:37-39 am; 5:45-5:47 am; 5:53-5:58 am; 6:31 am.

How did we ever get to this point?

The answer is easy.

Last night was culmination of years of government and IDF inaction in the face of terrorism from Gaza.

It was the culmination of years of deliberate obfuscation and political correctness, claiming that missile sirens were “false alarms” and of four months of letting terrorists launch thousands of incendiary kites and balloons into southern Israel with impunity.

It was the culmination of years of politicians in Jerusalem blathering about how “Israel will not permit missiles to be fired into Israel” and then permitting missiles to be fired into Israel.

It was the culmination of an egregiously passive IDF General Command led by a succession of “humanitarian” Chiefs of Staff that value the lives of our enemies over the lives of our own citizens–and a General Staff that even apologizes to Hamas when we kill their snipers who are targeting our soldiers.

Finally, though it hardly needs to be said again here on israelstreet as we have for the last year, the events of last night show once and for all:

–that Israel has lost all deterrence.

–that our missile defense system cannot be relied on.

–that the people of southern Israel are nothing more than missile fodder insofar as our government is concerned.

This blog will be updated today as events warrant.
