Special Notice:

Your humble servant is in lovely Eilat for the next few days where the predicted temperature today is 47 C  or about 117 F. That coupled with an expected 25 mph wind should make for the kind of weather we happen to enjoy.

At this moment, I am on the Eilat promenade looking down the blue Bay of Eilat. To the right, Israel stretches down the coast toward the Egyptian Sinai. The border with Egypt is only about 3 miles away.

To my left is Aqaba, Jordan which is less than a quarter of a mile away. Further down the coast is Saudi Arabia, just barely visible in the morning haze.  Now that the Saudis have given Israel overflight rights (as has Bahrain apparently this morning), flights may soon be arriving here at Ramon International Airport from that direction.

Today’s Blog will be continued throughout the day.

There are 25,990 active cases.

The numbers are increasingly bad. A large spike in the number of confirmed cases, a continued double digit count in the number who have died, and a surge in active cases: Corona is not going away from Israel any time soon.

The plan of Corona Czar Ronni Gamzu is to close down the “reddist” cities by limiting the distance their residents may travel from the house, imposing night curfews, and keeping schools closed. Those cities, defined as having the highest risk due to the density of housing in them, the volume of transportation and mixing between residents and non-residents, are: Bnei Brak, Tira, Beit Shemesh, Kfar Qassem, Umm al-Fahm, Eld, Beitar Illit, Lakia , Dalit al-Carmel, Ma’ale Iron and Taibeh.

Why else are these cities red? For example, the rate of positive tests in all is over 20%, and each city has at least 5% of all new patients in Israel.

As noted, closing down the cities is Gamzu’s “plan”. Whether it will be approved given the opposition of haredi politicians is anyone’s guess.
