The News on the Israeli Street

The daily Corona (Covid-19) update . . .

Here are the numbers over the last 48 hours (from 8 am Friday until 8 am today):

398,664 Israelis have been confirmed with the virus since the pandemic began last March.

There are 8,986 newly confirmed cases.

584 are in critical condition—an increase of 78

133 of the most critically ill are on ventilators—an increase of 6

3,210 have died–an increase of 39

There are currently 35,471 active Corona cases in Israel.

Obviously, the worst of the numbers aside from the dead, are the 4000+ new cases per day and surging number of critically ill. See Today’s Blog below for more details.

The continuing outrage over Ahuvya Sandak’s murder . . .

Not surprisingly given what we now know, the Police Division of Internal Affairs (DIP) seems to be working overtime to exonerate the 3 undercover detectives that caused the death of Ahuvya–even to the extraordinary point of allowing the detectives help in the investigation.

However yesterday, Deputy State Attorney Shlomo Lemberger ordered DIP to investigate the detectives–without their help.

Meanwhile, thousands of people rallied in Jerusalem yesterday in support of the Sandak family. Some of those in the rally as well as police surrounding the rally were wounded when violence erupted.

More on the murderer of Esther Horgan . . .

It has come to light that the confessed terrorist entered Israel by illegally infiltrating through the separation fence in Samaria.

Just like tens of thousands of other Palestinians do everyday–while the police look the other way.

Lockdown At 5:00 PM!

Six hours from now at 5 pm, Israel will enter its 3rd lockdown.  Specifically:

*People may not travel more than 1000 meters from their place of residence except for special reasons.

*People may not visit another person’s home.

*All non-essential services and stores are closed.

*Businesses that do not have a public interaction may only operate at 50% personnel.

*Restaurants are only open for delivery; no more takeout.

*Bed and breakfasts, beauty salons, hairdressers, parks, zoos, and alternative medicine facilities are closed.

*All cultural and leisure activities are closed.

* Public transportation can only operate at 50% capacity.

*Public school grades 5-10 are closed for in-person classes and can only operate by computer. Preschool-4 and 11-12 remain open as usual.

As we all know from previous lockdowns, the devil is in the details. For example, in previous lockdowns, there were more than 50 “special reasons” that allowed one to break the 1000 meter rule.

In any case, supermarkets are jammed this morning, and people are rushing to malls as if they have never seen a store–in anticipation of the closure.

This closure is supposed to last 2 weeks, but will probably last 4 if the government adheres to its own guidelines of not reopening until there are fewer than 1000 new cases a day and the R (reproduction rate–the number a sick person infects) falls below 1.

Inasmuch as we are now averaging more than 4000 new cases a day and have an R rate of more than 3, this lockdown may last a long time.
