Mansour Abbas Takes Center Stage

The Israeli media and street are awash with reports of political machinations in all directions.

The blockbuster event of the day was the speech given by Mansour Abbas, the head of Raam, an Israel-Arab Islamist party. Raam won 4 seats in the coming Knesset–and those four seats may well push one side or the other over the magic 61 seats necessary to form a coalition.

In that speech, Abbas seemed to lay the groundwork for recommending that PM Netanyahu become the next prime minister. Not once did he mention the Palestinians despite the fact that Abbas has spent much of his time in recent years talking about how he represents the Palestinians “who were disenfranchised by the Nakba.”

He is universally reviled by the “right” in Israel.

Not surprisingly, one of the parties on the “right”, Bezalel Smotrich’s National Zionism party, immediately came out after Abbas’ speech and lambasted Netanyahu for even entertaining the notion that Abbas could be part of a Netanyahu-led coalition.

Smotrich made it clear that if Abbas joins forces with Netanyahu, National Zionism with its 7 seats will never sit with Netanyahu.

We are now within 5 days of when the various party heads will troop down to President Rivlin and reveal which person they are endorsing to form a coalition. No one knows which way it will go.
