The News on the Israeli Street

The daily Corona update . . .

2,389 more Israelis were confirmed “yesterday” as having Covid-19. There are now 31,964 active cases in the country.

1,300,968 Israelis have contracted Corona since the pandemic began.

The positive test rate yesterday was 2.30%.

457 Israelis are in serious condition with another 193 in critical condition on ventilators.

7,882 Israelis have died–20 since yesterday.

Vaccinations:

6,172,196 Israelis have received one dose.

5,674,496 Israelis have received two doses.

3,696,299 Israelis have received three doses.

The Muslim world goes bananas again . . .

In a ruling sure to be overturned by a higher Israeli court, a Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court ruled yesterday in favor of  Rabbi Aryeh Lippo’s claim that he has every right to pray silently on the Temple Mount and that the Israel Police have no right to violate his freedom of worship.

Wow and double wow. Of course, we have argued here for years that Jews and Christians should have freedom of access to and prayer on the Temple Mount just like Muslims. As small as this ruling is (silent prayer), still it is a step in the right direction.

Of course, the Muslims went completely cuckoo. The Jordanian Foreign Ministry labeled Rabbi Jaffa “an extremist”, and said that the ruling is a violation of international law. It was not long yesterday until the Turks and Egyptians chimed in.

Say what?

But Hamas and the PLO went the Jordanians one step further calling for a massive uprising to project the Al Aqsa Mosque.

From old Rabbi Lippo.

Shimon Peres may be dead but his bad memory lives on . . .

A former Knesset Legislator for the Labor Party, Collette Avital, claimed yesterday in an interview that she was sexually assaulted by Shimon Peres in 1984: “He suddenly pinned me to the door and tried to kiss me.” It was one of several incidents involving Peres that Avital described.

Of course, such stories about Peres “the ladies man” abound, but leftists have chosen to ignore them because Peres was their hero.

The Israel-Azerbaijan Connection

“He should stop hugging Zionist drones and creating tensions; otherwise, he will wake up to the sound of precision missiles.”

A senior Iranian official referring to this blurry screenshot from a video made two days ago showing Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev patting an Israeli drone:

Before we get to the current situation, it would be helpful to take a look at the problems between Iran and Azerbaijan, and then to review the long relationship between Azerbaijan and Israel.

To begin with, Azerbaijan shares a border with Iran that runs for just over 700 kilometersa 130 kilometer section of which Azerbaijan has recently reestablished control over on its side of the border.

In fact, more than 18 million ethnic Azerbaijanis live on the Iranian side of the border. Those Azerbaijanis are a constant worry for Tehran because they have openly supported Azerbaijan in its wars with Armenia.

At the same time, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Pakistan have been holding exercises in and around the Caspian Sea.

Fast forward to three weeks ago. On September 21, Iran decided to hold military drills for the first time just across the border from that 130 kilometer section described above. Tehran rolled in hundreds of tanks and other military hardware infuriating the Azerbaijanis.

Meanwhile, the Iranian Ministry issued a statement saying it “would not tolerate the presence of the Israeli regime along the borders of Iran.”

On October 1, the Iranians began the second phase of their drills which they named “Fatehan-e Khaybar” which refers to the Battle of Khaybar in 628 CE where Muslim forces defeated Jews.

So what is Israel’s role in all of this?

As odd as it may sound given the fact that Azerbaijan is Muslim (30,000 Jews live in the country with 5000 in Baku), Israel has had extensive ties with Baku for the last 30 years in virtually every area including trade, cultural and educational exchanges, and security matters. For example, 40% of the oil used in Israel comes from Azerbaijan.

Insofar as security is concerned, Israel has provided Azerbaijan with artillery, anti-tank missiles, anti-infantry weaponry, and battlefield aviation including drones. Several years ago, Azerbaijan granted Israel access to Azerbaijan air force bases, and in fact it was reported this morning that two Israeli F35s are now in Azerbaijan at the Sitalchay Military Air Base located 500 km from the Iranian border.

Yesterday, there were several “trackings” of Azerbaijani flights from Tel Aviv to Baku including this one:

ZP are the call letters of

What is the bottom line?

Conflicts in the Azerbaijani area of the world have a way of breaking out without warning. Azerbaijan—even with Israel’s help–is no match for Iranian ballistic and cruise missiles, so one has to assume that should a war erupt it will be as a result of an Iranian provocation.

Shabbat Shalom From Israel!
