The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

Palestinian terrorists attempted to kill Israelis on Road 55 near the Karni Shomron Junction, neat the Tekoa Junction, on Road 465 beside Deir Abu Mash’al, between Chomesh and Mevo Dotan, south of the Avraham Hassano Junction, at Luban a-Sharqiya, at Al-Abud, Singil near Ramallah, on the Gush Etzion-Hevron highway, and at another two dozen locations.

A number of Israelis were wounded.

The daily Corona update . . .

7,603 new cases of Corona were confirmed yesterday bringing to 90,584 the total number of Israelis with an active case of Covid-19.

The positive test rate was 13.69%.

597 Israelis are in serious condition in hospitals with another 219 in critical condition on ventilators.

10,126 Israelis have died of Corona since the pandemic began–an increase of 12 since Friday. This number is not up to date because the Health Ministry doesn’t report weekend deaths until Monday.

A clearer picture of Hezbollah missile capabilities . . .

A somewhat different analysis of Hezbollah’s arsenal emerged yesterday:

As you can see, this information comes from the Israeli company, Alma.

As you can see, this information comes from the Israeli company, Alma.

To present the information in linear format:

145,000 mortars

65,000 short range rockets/missiles

5,000 long and mid-range missiles

2000 uavs (drones)

“hundreds” advanced conventional weapons including precision guided missiles

Any way you slice it, the Hezbollah arsenal is formidable, and the fear is that the terror group now possesses the ability to transform its long and mid-range missiles and possibly its short range rockets and missiles into precision guided missiles.

So what was accomplished? . . .

As we have reported here, Finance Minister Liberman was behind a new law that went into effect on January 1 that increased the tax on “sugary drinks”.

Ostensibly, the point was to make Israelis consume fewer calories and become healthier.

The first reports are in. During the last two months there has been a 25% decrease in the consumption of such drinks.

However, during the same time there has  been 28% increase in the consumption of such items as popsicles, gummy candies, chocolates, and sweet snacks of all types.

Where Does Israel Stand On Ukraine (Part 2)

Two statements were issued by our Israeli government today concerning Ukraine.

First from FM Lapid:

“Israel intends to vote in favor of condemning Russia for its attack on Ukraine [in the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday or Wednesday].

Israel will not remain silent, and will instead take a clear position and choose a side. At the same time, Israel needs to be calculated regarding all of its own interests.”

Second from PM Bennett speaking at the weekly cabinet meeting:

“First of all, on behalf of all the citizens of Israel, I would like to express the hope that this conflict will be resolved before the war develops further, and that there will be serious humanitarian consequences far beyond what we can imagine.

We pray for the well-being of the citizens of Ukraine and hope that it will prevent further bloodshed. We are conducting ourselves in a measured and responsible manner.

In the next two days, a plane carrying 100 tons of Israeli humanitarian equipment will arrive in Ukraine for civilians who are also in the battle zones, and for those trying to leave. Kits for water purification, medical equipment and medicine, as well as tents, blankets, sleeping bags and other equipment that can help civilians who are outside their homes in the cold winter weather.”

You will notice, dear reader, that what is missing from both statements is any mention of Russia, its invasion, and Vladimir Putin.

Israel continues to try to walk a tightrope between doing what is right (condemning Russia) and maintaining a status quo in Syria which permits Israeli aircraft to attack Iranian/Hezbollah positions.
