TODAY’S BLOG:

From a Duma detainee to Ehud Olmert, it has been an astonishing day on the Israeli judicial scene.

CASE 1: The Duma detainees.

As was noted yesterday on this blog, one of the Duma teenaged detainees was finally charged with a crime yesterday–but not what he had been held in prison for 30 days for. He was bizarrely charged with brawling with a Bedouin shepherd two years ago.

As a result, a district court in Lod immediately ruled that the teenager should be released to house arrest.

If you can believe this, Shin Bet and the police were back in court this afternoon in an attempt to extend the teenager’s detention even longer. The court rejected the request and ordered the boy immediately released to house arrest.

Chai Bar, the teenager’s lawyer blasted the entire system:

“After the month in which the suspect was not connected to Duma . . .  today, the court rejected an appeal of the state, and the suspect will be released. The entire investigation consisted of disproportionate large-scale arrests . . . violent interrogation methods, degradation, humiliation and torture of suspects . . . [and] things still to be exposed in the future. It is time to end the affair . . .”

The Honenu lawyers’ association representing the detainees was even more critical: “This [case] is outrageous. After 29 days of tough interrogation in the GSS, shaking, sleep deprivation, physical and psychological violence, it becomes clear that the only charge against this boy is that he was involved in a fight with a Bedouin almost two years ago! We hope that a commission of inquiry will be established to examine the behavior of the Shin Bet and the law enforcement authorities of the State of Israel on this case. “

Meanwhile, other detainees still remain locked up in a Shin Bet prison.

Update 7 pm–>

It has just been announced that the Israeli Prison Authorities are defying the court order to release the detainee–because they received “an order from above” not to do so.  An order from above? Who is above the law in Israel?

Further Update 7:30 pm–>

Apparently, the detainee has been released to house arrest and is on his way home after 30 days.

CASE 2: The infamous wedding video.

Shin Bet obtained an arrest warrant from a court today for one of the dancers in the wedding video.

What was he arrested for? Waving a gun and wearing a T-shirt.

As it turns out, the guns being waved at the wedding were all plastic toy guns. Here is the T-Shirt:

The shirt says "Kahane was right." It is a sentiment often seen on T-shirts, car decals, and on posters throughout Judea and Samaria.

The shirt says “Kahane was right.” It is a sentiment often seen on T-shirts, car decals, and on posters throughout Judea and Samaria. It refers to the late Rabbi Meir Kahane who warned endlessly against trying to coexist with Arabs. Many people believe he was correct.

A lawyer for the arrested man, Itamar Ben Gvir, said this morning that there is no crime in wearing a T-shirt, and ” . . . even if the act [of dancing with a gun] is considered tasteless, there is no criminal offense in dancing with toy guns.”

Update 7 pm–>

It has just been announced that three other dancers at the wedding, including the groom himself, have unbelievably been arrested by the police.

CASE 3: Sarah Netanyahu, again.

Remember during the last election how the Prime Minister’s wife was dragged through the mud by a disgruntled employee who claimed that he had been forced to take wine bottles to a recycling center–and that the money gained from turning in the bottles had been taken by Sarah?

Well, now police have announced that they are continuing that investigation and expanding it. Specifically, Sarah Netanyahu, and perhaps even the Prime Minister, will interrogated “under caution” about supposedly illegal gifts that Sarah received from visiting dignitaries.

Of course, as we all now know, there is no crime in accepting such gifts–as long as the gifts are turned over to the state when Netanyahu leaves office.

The leftist witch-hunt against Sarah Netanyahu continues.

CASE 4: The Ehud Olmert case.

The Israel Supreme Court issued its long awaited ruling in the Olmert bribery cases which dragged on for nearly three years.

You may remember that Olmert was found guilty by Tel Aviv Judge David Rozen and sentenced to six years in prison.  At issue were several different bribes, one ($60,000) that Olmert received directly, and the other ($144,000) that Olmert supposedly received through his brother.

To make a long story short, the Supreme Court threw out the conviction on the $144,000 bribe, outrageously stating that there was insufficient evidence that Olmert knew that his brother had received the money. The decision is outrageous because there was, in fact, all kinds of evidence that Olmert knew exactly what was going on.

The conviction on the smaller bribe was affirmed.

As a result, Olmert’s leftist pals on Supreme Court reduced his sentence from 6 years to 18 months. Supposedly, he will begin serving it on February 15. In an amazing manipulation of the justice system, he has yet to serve a day for any of his egregious misdeeds.

Of course, in the Israeli system, there is always room for another appeal so don’t hold your breath for February 15th–and don’t be surprised if President Reuven Rivlin pardons Olmert for all of the crimes that he committed.
